PRODUCTIVE COUGH: Yes it is normal. Upper respiratory infections produce inflammation of the breathing passages making it difficult for the lungs to clear mucus. The body's response is to cough in an attempt to get rid of the phlegm. Keep hydrated and monitor your symptoms. If they do not improve in the next few days, touch base with your doctor for further advice. ...Read more

Possible reflux: One possibility is atypical or "silent" reflux. I know this may sound strange but if stomach juice comes up it can reach the voice box region leading to cough. If even a little stomach juice reaches the mouth it can be very bitter or lead to a bad taste. Stop drinking acids. No sodas, coffee, tea. Stay away from tomatoes and sauce. Don't eat or drink for 3 hours before bed. See your md. ...Read more

My kids have a cold: nasal congestion, and a fever. Usually when they have a cold there is no fever. Is this normal? If i get it will antibiotics help?

No Antibiotic Needed: The common cold is a viral infection against which antibiotics are ineffective. Fever may or may not be present in a common cold infection. Keep in mind that allergies also cause nasal congestion and may sometimes be mistaken as common cold infections. See a doctor to verify what your kids have. An antibiotic may be indicated only if there is a secondary bacterial infection as the sequela. ...Read more

I have recurrent tonsillitis, when I come down with it I also get a lot of mucus on my chest and cold symptoms. Is this normal? Tonsillectomy needed?

Not yet: Recurrent sore throat is not necessarily recurrent bacterial tonsillitis. This needs to be documented by positive streptococcus on throat culture at least 3 times in a year that did not respond to appropriate antibiotic therapy. Also, chronically large obstructing tonsils can be an added reason for tonsillectomy. The chest cold symptoms may be from postnasal viral drainage. Hope that helps. ...Read more

My 3yo great nephew has an occasional cough, bad breath and his temperature is high a lot of times when I check it. Maybe no connection. Should I wory?

Maybe: Cough, fever and bad breath in toddlers are common signs of a cold or possibly a sinus infection. If it's just a cold, it should go away by itself with 5-7 days of supportive care; if it lasts longer, he should be seen by a doctor. Preschool aged children typically get 4-6 colds per winter season, sometimes more and this can be normal. You can always ask his mom whether they've seen a doctor. ...Read more
