If you're suicidal now, please tell your parents (your question says you're 15), or a teacher or counselor! or you can go to an er or to your doctor. I get really moody during period. Happy, sad, depressed, everything in just matter of minutes! is there a way for me to control my mood during this?

I get really moody during period. Happy, sad, depressed, everything in just matter of minutes! is there a way for me to control my mood during this?

A few suggestions: The answer is somewhat counter intuitive. When you feel pms you don't feel like exercising, but exercise helps reduce the symptoms. Keep track of your period, knowing that the depressive symptoms are from pms helps take them in stride. Visit with friends to improve your mood, too. The hardest one is to fight the craving for chocolate, since studies show that it may make the pms worse. ...Read more

I get depressed and reclusive DURING my period. Its getting worse to shake off. Is this just hormones and age? Any homoeopathic remedies?

Deepening habit: No doubt there are hormones involved - your age seems that not too young - not too old one, so I can't see how that plays a role other than it seems to be long enough to form a deep seated habit and thus expectancy. My anxiety and depression get worse 7d before period starts. My counselor asks me to take 25mg Zoloft (sertraline) only once 7d before period. Is that normal?

No: This is not an approved use of Zoloft (sertraline) and other than increasing the expense of your treatment has no evidentiary value for the treatment of PMDD. The dose and use is too little for any effectiveness outside of placebo. Unless you are taking this medicine daily in a therapeutic dose I would not expect a positive outcome. ...Read more

How to help a HIV depressed person? how to reduce his fear of turning HIV positive during window period?

HIV+: or not, depression may be from another cause (guilt over risky behaviors, inherited depression, not knowing, etc) The best medicine for anxiety and rumination when possibilities loom and the mind imagines all sorts of outcomes is to replace uncertainty with knowledge. Start with the local HIV hot line or depression hot line and go from there ( recruit the help of trained people who do this ) ...Read more

Talk w/ OBGYN: Discuss this w/ Dr who prescribed your medication(s). It may be that some CBT talk therapy can help w/ this and life in general - going w/ the flow may be a fine idea but you can do it more successfully w/ a coach to show you the best strategies. Best wishes! ...Read more

Tamsulosin makes my husband anxiuos, depressed and almsot paranoid. Can we stop for a few days and try saw palmetto during the stop period. Alternate?

Go see your/his doc: Any one with side effects to medication needs to inform prescribing physician and ask about alternatives whether dietary supplements, otc or prescription medications. Recent studies show no benefit from saw palmetto against enlarged prostate. Pygeum might be useful. But all this needs to be discussed w/his doctor. Perhaps other coincidental issues causing "side effects" need to be addressed. ...Read more

Stopped birth control for amenorrhea and had natural period. Mood (chronic depression) improved during flow. Why? How can I recapture rest of month?

Menses and Mood: Many women's moods are dysregulated by hormone changes. As estrogen changes, serotonin changes. Keep a chart: mood (describe and rate), life events, sleep, irritability, changes in your menstrual cycle (ovulation, onset period, flow, end of period). Bring this to your ob/gyn or primary md. If you need more help, find a psychiatrist who is trained in "reproductive psychiatry" or "moods & hormones". ...Read more

I have horrible cramps during my period to where i just lay in bed in a fetal position all day. I get diahrrea, nausiated, and a little depressed.

Endometriosis: You may have endometriosis that causes the pain. Still, severe dysmenorrhea may cause the release of a lot of prostaglandins (pain causing products) that cause the diarrhea and nausea you describe. Patients with premenstrual dysphoric disorder also report similar symptoms. Any of these can be treated medically so you should contact your physician for evaluation. ...Read more
