Stool is kinda black / loose .EDG normal. found sludge on gallbladder. Hida scan normal.. Have diverticulosis and hiatel hernia. Should I be concerned?

Rule out bleeding: Whenever there is a history of black stools it is good to make sure that blood is not causing this. If you just had an EGD it is unlikely that you have a bleeding ulcer, but if it was done a while ago this could be a new development. Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) can also cause black stools, as can iron supplements. A simple guaiac test can quickly rule out a bleed in your gut, so call your Dr! :) ...Read more

Narrow stools: Narrow stools are not necessarily a sign of colon cancer and nay be seen with scarring of the colon from prior episodes of diverticulitis. A negative sigmoidoscopy is reassuring in making cancer unlikely but a gastroenterologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you. ...Read more

There are specific indications in regards to the number of infections and bleeding episodes before a resection would be indicated. Diverticular dz: Extensive diverticulosis is one of the indications for total colectomy there did you get repeated infections, were you symptomatic with pain, fever , bleeding in stools etc. Removing the colon will still allows you to lead a normal life though initially you will need low residue diet, that means avoiding bulk forming food so that you,initially you have some loose stools but slowly will be adjusted ...Read more

Polyps can bleed.: While polyps and diverticuli can bleed, the bleeding from the latter is dramatic and scary, while the bleeding from the former is very slow and not noticeable overtly. Your situation sounds like bleeding from polyps. ...Read more

Rectal bleed?: if the blood you noted were bright red, then the bleeding would likely be from a hemorrhoid or an anal fissure, either of which can result from straining to pass a difficult stool. If the blood were more black and created an entirely black movement, the blood would be coming from an upper tract source such as an ulcer.
