Crying (Definition)

Crying in infancy is described as a loud, high-pitched sound made by infants in response to certain situations. Infants have a cry reflex that is a normal response to some stimuli, such as pain or hunger. Older children and adults cry for emotional reasons such as pain, fear, sadness, or frustration. Premature infants may not have a cry reflex, so they must be monitored closely for signs ...Read more

Doctor's exam needed: A 2 month old baby normally does not have bad-smelling poop nor smelly gas. If that is happening, the doctor can examine the baby and look for infectious causes such as viral or bacteria causes. Also, a few babies have trouble digesting what they eat, thus leading to bad-smelling poop and gas. Two months is still very young, so a parent should not wait. ...Read more

Baby sweats profusely in the heat at certain times of the day, is that ok?

Baby sweats profusely in the heat at certain times of the day, is that ok?

Maybe: Sweating is produced by activity of the sympathetic branch of the autonomic (automatic) nervous system and responds to ambient (environment) temperature. Make sure that you are not covering the baby up too much with clothing, blankets etc. If this is not the problem it could be something as simple as sugar in the diet, even if that does sound strange to you! ...Read more

Lotions: I find the most common reason for a sour smell in an infant is the application of various lotions. Babies don't make bo & those that might need a metabolic workup. ...Read more

I have a 6 month old baby boy he has a very hot head at times and sweats a lot. Is it normal to have a very hot head?

Probably ok: This is probably ok. It is summertime and hot in most areas of the US now. Be sure and dress him lightly, just a onsie. Check for temperature with a rectal thermometer, if it is over 99.4 undress him completely and recheck it. Sometimes babies just get a bit warm. Anything above 100.4 and you need to let your pediatrician know. ...Read more
