Is it normal for my baby to have a bowel movement after each feeding?

Is it normal for my baby to have a bowel movement after each feeding?

Yes: This is normal, especially with breastfed babies. It is also normal for breastfed babies to go 10 days to 2weeks without pooping. As long as they have soft stools and their belly does not seem to be getting bigger or hard or painful this is fine. If your baby's suddenly begins to have watery more frequent stools they may have an infection and should see a doctor to make sure they are hydrated. ...Read more

My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?

My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?

Yes, but...: Keep in mind the symptoms of constipation are by definition hard and painful to pass stools. Remember a little pushing and uncomfortableness is ok as long as the stools are soft. Also an every other day stool for some bottle fed babies is fine. Keep in mind the position babies are in as they stool, FLAT ON THEIR BACK. Can you imagine? One oz water and one oz apple juice once will help. ...Read more

How long should a formula fed infant do between bowel movements?

How long should a formula fed infant do between bowel movements?

BM in formula fed: Infant. They may go from several times a day to once a week. It is very much a variable thing. The idea that an infant has to go everyday or they are not " normal" is just not true. Think about how different we all are as adults. As long as baby does not have a rock hard tender abdomen, no fever, is eating well, and not tearing its little bum when it goes it is okay. What goes in will come out. ...Read more

Is it normal for my infant's bowel movements to be lightly colored?

Is it normal for my infant's bowel movements to be lightly colored?

Yes: Baby stool (poop) can be light colored, usually a blend of yellow with some brown or green. However, if the poop gets lighter and lighter in color, becoming a grey/white color, then there is a problem (not enough bile is mixing into the stool). A doctor will then need to evaluate the baby, to look for a liver or gall bladder problem causing the very light colored stool. ...Read more

Pain isn't normal: It is common for some breast fed babies to have a bowel movement with each feeding (sometimes, just small squirts). As long as it is soft, not hard balls, it is usually normal. But, if your baby really seems uncomfortable and cries excessively, he should be checked by his doctor. ...Read more

How long before infant has a bowel movement without struggling?

How long before infant has a bowel movement without struggling?

It depends: The problem is that babies aren't coordinated and don't open their sphincter immediately when they have a bowel movement. Also, it's harder to have a bowel movement when you are lying down. As long as the stool is soft, there really isn't a problem with them straining a bit. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is anything wrong. If the stool is hard balls, see your doctor for help. ...Read more

Why do I find blood in my infant's diaper when she has not made a bowel movement?

Is it blood?: First, is it blood? Newborns especially can pass dark urine that when dried in a diaper can look like blood. Sometimes genuine blood can come from bloody vaginal discharge (normal in a newborn), or from a crack or fissure near the anus. Not sure what's going on?
