Is it normal for my baby to fall asleep sucking her thumb?

Is it normal for my baby to fall asleep sucking her thumb?

Yes: All babies need to develop self-soothing skills and many babies do this with non-nutritive sucking (for example, thumb-sucking). Your baby may like the breast feeding at night because of the extra warmth and contact that only you can give him! ...Read more

Thumb-sucking is : natural till 4 yrs & does not harm or decay teeth. See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/2676311/. AAP recommends at 1 year: 1st dental visit. Wean from bottle to open-mouth, double-handled cup given only with sit-down meals & snacks. Limit milk & milk products to 16-21 oz./day; limit juice to 0-4 oz./ day. Brush teeth with rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste after meals & before sleep. ...Read more

Numb thumb: Numbness is usually from nerve compression , if it was compressed a long time may take even a few days. Check for pulse and capillary refill ( if you press turns white and on relase turns pink) motrin/ aleve/ ASA if not allergic- may decrease the swelling , ASA also decreases miniclots. Would follow up with doc may want to try diltizem an anti-spasm. Check for MS. If cold thumb go to ER NOW ...Read more

CTS: You are describing classic symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Try a wrist/hand support brace at night when you sleep. It may help quite a bit. If it does not, irritation of the nerves that go into the fingers from a source up higher (in the neck) may be the cause and evaluation by healthcare provider needed. Hope this helps. Best of luck ...Read more
