About a week: There's 2 related questions here. It takes about a week for fluoxetine (prozac) to leave the body after dosing has stopped. This is longer than other antidepressants. But all antidepressants, including prozac, continue to have an effect on mood for 2-3 weeks after they're stopped. The brain effect persists a couple weeks even after the drug is gone. ...Read more

I'm currently taking 40mg Prozac (fluoxetine) daily and I'm wondering if it's depleting the magnesium in my body?
Milder?: It depends on your symptoms. Prozac (fluoxetine) is more activating than many other antidepressants and better for low motivation and energy. There are many antidepressants and each have their own side effect profile and mechanism of action. Discuss options with prescribing doc. If (s)he is not a psychiatrist consider requesting a referral ...Read more
I've been off my fluoxetine 20 mg for almost 3 weeks and I'm still getting zaps through my body. When should I expect the withdrawal symptoms to cease?
Unusual: For you to have the "zaps" last so long and it is very unusual on Fluoxetine. It may not be from the Fluoxetine. I would advise you ask your doctor to give you 10 mg to take for a few week and see if you feel better. Then if the 10 mg are tablets, you could cut them in half and take 5 mg for a few weeks. This might help getting off of it easier. ...Read more
If your seratonin low cn it cause u 2 hv band headaches & all kinds of horrible symptoms 2 your body. I use to be on Prozac (fluoxetine) 25 mg & now off of it.
In roundabout way: If you were on Prozac (fluoxetine) and stopped, it's possible to have some uncomfortable discontinuation symptoms [including headaches] even though Prozac (fluoxetine) is less likely than other ssri's to cause these. Another possibility is that Prozac (fluoxetine) was helping you relax, including the muscles around your scalp & forehead, which can tighten into tension headaches. Serotonin doesn't necessarily need to be "low" for this. ...Read more

There's hope..: Here are some things I'd like to know: who is treating you? Your family doc or a psychiatrist? How long have you been on Prozac (fluoxetine) at this dose? Have you been on any other meds, either alone or with the prozac (fluoxetine)? Are you seeing a therapist? You need to see your doctor and let them know how bad you are feeling. Get a referral for a therapist if you don't have one. You can feel a lot better! ...Read more

Hi how long does Prozac (fluoxetine) take to digest in the body. I am bulimic and binge/purge about an hour after taking tablets. Is this a problem?
Variable times: To be absorbed into the body, the capsule contents must fully dissolve to, liquid, then be transported across the stomach or intestine blood vessels. Suspect your times are approximate for eating and purging after taking Meds, so at best some drug does get in, but not all. ...Read more

SSRI: Fluoxetine is the first of the "newer generation" of antidepressants developed around 1990, called selective (or specific) serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin available at brain synapses. Fluoxetine and other SSRIs are powerful anti-depressant and anti-anxiety agents. ...Read more
SSRI antidepresant : It's been around a while now, but pretty revolutionary when it first came out. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor most commonly used to treat depression. The ssris were a big step forward due to far less side effects than the tricyclic antidepressants that were the main treatment for depression prior to that. ...Read more

Prozac (fluoxetine): I agree with drs. Ali and satinover that Prozac (fluoxetine) can be very useful when prescribed and re-assessed carefully. However, I believe it (and other antidepressants) can be over-prescribed too. I have seen non-psychiatrists (as well as psychiatrists) jump to prescription pads when a patient weeps or tells of grief following a death. Not every tear signifies depression requiring prozac (fluoxetine). ...Read more
