Did I break a bone in my foot? Yesterday I fell walking up the stairs...Horrible pains through the top of my foot and instant swelling and bruising

Possibly: While trauma can certainly lead to a fracture, the foot/ankle is a very common site for sprains/strains. If you are unable to bear weight on that foot for more than a few steps or if ther is tenderness to touch a particular point such as the bridge of the foot or the base of the small toe, I would x-ray it to be sure. You can try icing and elevating the foot to see if there is any relief. ...Read more

My daughter fell from a tree a few months ago and strained her foot (X-Ray showed no bone breaks). Her gait is still a bit off. Should I be concerned?

Possibly: An initial x-ray of the foot at the time of injury will not always show a hairline fracture of a foot bone. If there is continued pain after 2 weeks, a repeat xray may reveal a fracture that wasn't evident on the initial exam. An MRI is sometimes needed to evaluate subtle fractures.
An orthopedist evaluation of your daughter's foot injury may be helpful. ...Read more

With hardware in ankle, could a relatively minor trauma cause the bone to break which otherwise might not have happened if there had not been a plate?

Not generally: In general a plate strengthens the bone by allowing healing without movement. Once the initial fracture has healed, the plate will not make it more likely to break that bone. It is possible, however, if the plate is still very fresh, that the screw sites will not yet have fully healed, and minor trauma might cause some damage in a freshly plated bone fracture. ...Read more

I jumped off a ledge and jammed my heel. It is swollen and throbs. Did I break it or sprain it? (i know how it feels tobreak a bone.)

Need an x-ray: Jumping and landing on your heel is a common way to fracture the calcaneus. An x-ray initially is a must to evaluate you for a fracture. A missed fracture, particularly of the calcaneus, can have very negative implications. For now, rest, ice, compression (ace-wrap) and elevation while limiting your weight-bearing, but get in to see a doctor soon! ...Read more
