Is there any possible harm in going to sleep with a cough drop in your mouth?

Is there any possible harm in going to sleep with a cough drop in your mouth?

Yes...: There is a risk of the cough drop going into your airway which is less protected while you sleep. Your cough reflex is suppressed during sleep so if the cough drop goes "down the wrong way", you could actually block your airway and essentially choke in your sleep. Better to take the cough drop out of your mouth before you fall asleep.

Last forever: This sounds like a post-viral cough which can last for weeks and there isn't anything that helps, at least that I can find. You just have to ride it out most of the time. As for the white circle in your mouth, it sounds like an aphthous ulcer, but difficult to say without seeing it.

Coughed hard w a cough drop in mouth, it slid down throat, felt like I was going to choke. Then kept sliding. Any chance of aspiration or is it ok?

You should be fine: It doesn't seem like your symptoms worsened after it. Most likely it went down to your stomach rather than lungs.

Not good: Not wise to go to bed with anything in your mouth as it could accidentally be aspirated. Cough drops high in sugar which feed the bacteria that cause cavities. Sore on tongue and inflamed gums may be from other oral problems. Pleased see your Dentist for appropriate treatment.

Have LPR maybe?: Avoid foods & behavior that delay stomach emptying &/or relax the lower esophageal sphincter--spicy, greasy food, mints, alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, tomato-based products, caffeinated & fizzy drinks, eating before bedtime, exercises. Lose weight. Elevate head of bed on blocks. Can try otc acid blocker for relief (h2's: tagamet, zantac, (ranitidine) pepcid; ppi's: prilosec, prevacid, nexium). Eval if persistent

Why would my tongue be numb when I eat or drink? Has happened for a few days. It's a bit numb like I sucked on a cough drop. I don't have allergies

Why would my tongue be numb when I eat or drink? Has happened for a few days. It's a bit numb like I sucked on a cough drop. I don't have allergies

Evaluation needed: This may be a sensitivity to an additive in a food, drink or toothpaste. Even if you have not had any allergies in the past, your immune system can develop allergies at any time. So get this checked out.

I was sleeping woke up to a cough with something in my mouth I spit out a jelly like glob of blood. No mucus?

I was sleeping woke up to a cough with something in my mouth I spit out a jelly like glob of blood. No mucus?

Something bled: The most common cause of coughing up blood is bronchitis, for the throat is so raw it bleeds. That would go away on its own. But, if you have not been coughing, other things can cause blood to collect in your throat, like nose bleeds. Once you get moving, you bring the blood up. It should stop happening after a few days. If it is heavy bleeding, or doesn't stop, you should seen a doctor.

Blood in morning mucus, mouth and nose. No cough. Started sleeping in a new house 3 days ago and air feels dry. Is this serious?

Blood in morning mucus, mouth and nose. No cough. Started sleeping in a new house 3 days ago and air feels dry. Is this serious?

Cause: May just be dry air causing nosebleed. Experiment with moisturizing air. If bleeding persists beyond a week of trying humidification, see ENT for exam. Bleeding means broken mucosal lining somewhere.

Anxiety and sob: Anxiety symptoms are not a sign of illness, they are the mind's ability to produce the "flight or fight" response which gives rise to many physiological changes include sob (shortness of breath), insomnia, dry mouth, aphasia, tremor and sweating. Depending on the cause of your anxiety symptoms, your health care provider can recommend appropriate treatment.

Hi I continue to bite my lip while I'm sleep & cannot stop until I wake up then I cough.... Am I having seizures??

Hi I continue to bite my lip while I'm sleep & cannot stop until I wake up then I cough.... Am I having seizures??

Considerations: Would be reluctant to diagnose nocturnal seizures based upon your description, as a sleep disorder would be more likely, such as sleep apnea, but also nocturnal bruxism. Would start with an overnight sleep study, and proceed based on outcomes. Should be an easy benign answer, and perhaps a night splint would solve the issues.

Few possibilities: dry cough could be silent acid reflux coming from stomach. Acid can place pressure on the sinuses and other areas in the mouth-nose area. Dry cough also caused by medication called ACE inhibitors-lisinopril/quinapril/-if ur Blood oressure is too high or too low it can cause headaches. And finally post nasal drip from congested sinuses can also cause some the symptoms ur having. See Doc for work up

.Every night while my husband is sleeping he will suddenly start to cough as if be was choked. By his saliva?

See below: The coughing could be due to acid reflux, due to gasping/choking episodes associated with sleep apnea, or symptoms of something else entirely. If he wakes up with morning headaches and has daytime sleepiness, a sleep medicine doctor evaluation may be recommended. Otherwise, he can see his pcp for his cough at night. Hope that helps!

Possible teething: Without examining you child it is impossible to diagnose his exact problem. Some things you may want to consider are the status of his baby teeth coming in. If his front teeth are in he may have difficulty with his molars. If his teeth are in are there brown stains or discoloration on his front teeth that does not brush away. Visit a pediatric dentist to determine the exact nature of his problems.

Upon waking up from a nap or nights sleep I spit up blood about 5 times then it clears. What could it be? Its only when I wake up and when I blow my nose there is no blood and when I cough no blood.

The: The source of blood can be from the lungs (bronchitis, cancer), stomach or esophagus (ulcers, inflammation, or cancer), or upper respiratory (nose, sinuses, pharynx). You need to be seen by a physician who can help narrow the possibilities and get you to the appropriate specialist (e.g. Ent, pulmonologist, surgeon, radiologist) for diagnosis and treatment.

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
