Is It Bad To Lift Muscles During Puberty
If somebody does not work out during puberty, will they be able to gain some muscle later on in life?
It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more
Form first: Attempts to gain muscle in an immature body can lead to injuries and frustration. Hormonal changes that occur during puberty set the stage for building more lean muscle once puberty is completed. Prior, or during this time, it is better to focus on learning and executing weightlifting exercises with proper form using a PVC pipe or lightweight empty bar. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My son is 11 & going through puberty. He's concerned to have big arm muscles like some of his more developed boys. Is it ok for him to work out & how?
Depends: The aap & sports medicine groups encourage a delay in power lifting/heavy lifting until skeletal maturity. This varies with each kid & generally equates to final height & pubertal stage. Lifting technique and exercises with lower weight loads can be started earlier under the supervision of trained coaches. Such limitations are meant to reduce the rate of injury in each age group. ...Read more
I'm 18 but I've only gained 11kg since the start of puberty. I was very late bloomer and am now 6'1". Barely any muscle with some fat (chest mostly)??
6'1": You should be seen by a hormone specialist and check whether your height is growing and to what extent. Getting taller without muscles is OK for 6'1" for a while but you do need to see someone who is expert at increasing your muscle size and strength. There are many places (physical training) that will help you gain weight and improve your strength. ...Read more
I'm an 18 y/o male. I already went through puberty but i still look like i'm 15/16. I am skinny and have muscle. Anything i can do to make face mature?
Enjoy who you are: Congratulations on these steps in becoming a man. You suggest you have both muscle mass and muscle definition ("skinny") and these are great -- i hope you'll continue to lead an athletic lifestyle. I'm having some trouble understanding your question. If you want a thicker beard, this may or may not come with time depending on your genes; many women prefer a sparsely-bearded man. Can you clarify? ...Read more

I'm 18 male and 2 years behind in puberty. I'm advancing in puberty but I have abnormally low muscle mass but with fat. My legs are very very skinny?
Late bloomer: As you notice other signs of late puberty, like facial hair, you will see more muscle growth. Testosterone boosts muscle growth but you also will need to exercise. If wt lifting while you are still getting taller focus on reps rather than high weight to protect your growth plates. Be patient! ...Read more

Is it possible that taking rogaine (minoxidil) and procerin during puberty to block DHT be bad for you?
Oral?: Procerin is a natural drug which will inhibit the 5 Alpha reductase enzyme, thus preventing testosterone from converting to dht. It hasn't been studied in kids and i can't vouch for adult studies. Dht is necessary for masculinization. Without enough of it, breast tissue could develop, but no one knows if procerin causes it in kids. Rogaine (minoxidil) topically should be discussed with a dermatologist. ...Read more

I am fasting for the month of Ramadan. I do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset (4am - 830pm). But I usually do muscle workout during. I am hearing rumors that working out during fasting hours does not gain muscle and is bad. Is this true?
You can gain muscle: mass during Ramadan, but it may not be wise to try so hard. Your body is adjusting to fasting, which means calorie restriction in your case, during significant hours of the day. Your body will steal from its fat reserves during and after your workout, but you'll already suffer the effects of reduced calories. Lifting weights might be more hazardous. Take it easy until Ramadan is over. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is not eating anything after a workout bad for you? Some days i would lift weights before i slept, but ate in morning. Can this cause muscle atrophy?
It is bad for you: If you exercise by weight lifting, it is best to replenish the protein and carbohydrates you've needed in order to lift weights within an hour after stopping exercise. You're breaking down muscle by lifting, and consuming protein with some carbs to help absorb the protein in that first hour will help ensure adequate muscle repair and growth. Otherwise, you're just breaking down muscle for energy. ...Read moreSee 4 more doctor answers
