When is the optimal time to have a protein shake after a workout? I've read 15-45 minutes following a workout. Is 0-15 minutes not optimal?

After cooled down: After intensive/extrenuous exercise, your body/muscles need to get oxygen/nutrients back (they are used during working out) and plenty of blood flow is essential to reduce Lactic Acid build up/cramps etc. During exercise, blood is pulled away from intestines/stomache and supply your muscles. So, let your body recover/normalize the flow, then you can eat--i would say 20-30min is adequate. Good luck. ...Read more

Is letting a 2.5 year old have a small sip of a protein shake a bad thing or ok?

Is letting a 2.5 year old have a small sip of a protein shake a bad thing or ok?

I don't see any harm: A protein dominated shake is essentially an alternative nutrition source. A 2.5yo may have an allergic reaction to one of the components of the shake as s/he might to any new food. Otherwise, a sip or a few ounces of such a drink would be unlikely to cause any harm. ...Read more

Can whey protein shake work the same for physical fitness as weights?

Hmmmm. . .: Not unless you have really heavy cans of whey protein and lift them a lot. :-) I agree with dr. Henning that whey and other proteins can support your muscle growth while you're also doing a weight resistance program. But why does not have the same functions as weights. Lifting weights train your muscles; drinking whey supports their growth. Other forms of protein include pea and soy. ...Read more

Are there any side effects of protein "shake" (whey brand)? I'm taking it three times a week when I play in gym

Safe: Whey protein isolates are generally very safe to ingest, especially at the amount you are using it. There is a potential for some abdominal distress if you take too much at once, but this is also rather rare. Assuming you have no other medical issues that would preclude you from processing protein, you should be just fine with the shakes. ...Read more

Meds effect appetite by the time I take them I am not hungry hrs later I'm so hungry feel like I'm going to vomit. Protein shake ok or cause wgt gain?

Protein Shakes: It's not the protein as much as the calories in the shake. Not sure which meds you are on and why? If you have no choice but to take them, you might want to discuss your appetite problems with your doctor. A long term "liquid" diet is problematic in terms of maintaining adequate nutrition, unless you consult with a nutritionist first. I would get to the root of the problem and correct the meds. ...Read more
