Is It A Sign Of Something If My Daughter Likes The Taste Of Metal
Daughter vomited what she describes as "tomato" red liquid. She said it did not have any taste of metal and only threw up once.?
Why does my teenage daughter keep getting kidney stones? She's just gone to the hospital for her third kidney stone. Is this a sign of something more serious?
Children that form kidney stones, especially multiple, usually have one or more of a variety of problems. For children that have normal urinary tracts (normal kidneys, normal ureters, and normal bladders) most of these children that do not have known syndromes or medical conditions will have underlying metabolic disorders that affect the way the kidneys filter and process minerals. Some children have low citrate levels, some have high oxalate, and some have other conditions. It is critical to evaluate the stones composition and the 24 hour urine studies on a child with kidney stones and especially with a child that has multiple kidney stones.
It must be determined that the child has normal urinary tracts and any other syndrome or conditions that predispose to stones. ...Read more

Daughter hit her head on a metal bar at the park. It instantly had an indent come up. Should I be worried?
Keep a close eye:
Indentation from a head injury is common and not necessarily a sign of worry in and in itself, esp in young children who have pliable skull bones.
More imp. Is to look for other sign of internal head injury causing bleeding such as change in mental alertness, vomiting or headaches. These symptoms can develop anytime in first 3 days for which the child would need to be seen at the hospital quickly ...Read more

My daughter is 17 months old. She did not gain any weight or height in the last 4 months. She is eating fine and is very active, so there are no other signs. What could be the problem?
Nothing: At that age, children don't gain weight and height as much as during the first 6 months of age, so you don't really have to measure her that often. So you can wait until your 18 month visit with the pediatrician and he/she will show you the growth curve that will demonstrate that she is doing fine. ...Read more

My 11 months old daughter might have swallowed a piece of glass. I am not sure. What are the signs if you do?
INGESTIONS: Check inside mouth with good light whether you see anything, any bleeding, watch for any distress in the child. Strain and watch stool for blood and the suspected object. Abdominal x-ray doesn't show glass. Give blend diet with more fiber, fluid. Most importantly: make the house child proof, remove all small objects, ingestables, meds, from floor, bed, couches etc. To prevent further happening. ...Read more
Use only if helpful: Many syrups have a pretty noxious taste. Codiclear has Guaifenesin (an expectorant) and hydrocodone (an opiate). It is unclear how helpful these medications are in children. The second ingredient may help your child sleep. For a medication like this, which is designed to prevent symptomatic relief, I always ask parents- is the treatment (e.g. Giving the med) worse than the symptom (e.g. Cough)? ...Read more

Should I be concerned if my 5 y/o daughter lost her top central tooth five months back with no sign of the new permanent ones. Normal?
Get it checked:
You should take her to a dentist for a clinical exam and x-rays in order to determine:
1. If that tooth is present under the gums
2. The angle of the missing tooth if present
3. If there is enough room in the mouth for it to properly erupt into place
4. The development of the rest of her erupted and unerupted teeth as well as her occlusion (bite). ...Read more

My daughter had a spinal tap done but it didn't show anything till day 10. So they said not spinal megitis but she has ever sign? Help please
I'm not sure what became positive at 10 days. If it was a bacterial culture one could assume that this is meningitis or it might be a contaminant. If the culture is negative, this could be interpreted as spinal meningitis which is usually self limiting.
She should follow up with her doctor. One should monitor her and re-evaluate if she worsens. ...Read more

If the teacher tells me that my daughter forgets things all of the time at school, is this a sign of adhd?
Yes: Your child''s teacher, although not a physician, is a 6 hour daily observer of your child, and his/her input is important in assessing the history of a child undergoing a thorough evaluation for adhd. My five year old daughter touched another little girls private area is this a sign of molestation? Should I be worried?
Time for discussion: We consider peer sexual exploration to be normal when it involves another kid within 2 years of their age. If it is beyond that threshold it enters a gray area of potential sexual exploitation. A simple open question to her of what this means to her would be in order. We try not to shame kids for normal behavior but the discussion can be neutral. ...Read more

What are some of the chemicals used in chemo to treat aml m4 my daughter was diagnosed with aml m4 but after chemo started had signs of aml m3?
The FAB type...: E.g. M4, M5, etc. Is based on the microscopic appearance of the leukemia cells. Usually the FAB class is not so important for choosing the drug treatment. M3 is different. A true M3 leukemia (aka acute promyelocytic leukemia) will also have a very specific gene mutation (PML/RARA) on molecular testing or cytogenetics. It is highly treatable, and responds to other drugs (esp. Retinoic acid and ATO) ...Read more
