Is it a big deal if my 3 year old snores?

Is it a big deal if my 3 year old snores?

Possibly: When kids have allergies or colds it is not unusual for them to snore. However, if the snoring persists it may be a symptom of sleep apnea. This may happen when the adenoids enlarge and block air passage during sleep. Kids in this situation are restless sleepers, wake up frequently and they pause breathing for several seconds all during sleep. Sleep apnea affects development and must be evaluated. ...Read more

Tonsils?: It is not normal for a 3 year old to snore like a grown man. He may have an obstructed airway, such as tonsils, nasal blockage, sleep apnea etc. Consider a ENT consultation through your primary care physician. Lack of a clear airway can affect his growth and development. ...Read more

Worrisome pattern: The tonsil/adenoid mass in humans grows faster than the kids do until about 8 yrs when it slows and the kids grow faster. Any 3-4 yo that is snoring will eventually develop sleep apnea & be in trouble. I would record the sounds of him sleeping & take it to his doc.I send these kids to an ENT.Most do quite well after a T&A. It is amazing how much better they sleep & play when this is fixed ...Read more

Is it normal for my almost 3 year old to snore loud and sometimes stop breathing for a few secs. Does not have cold and we have a humidifier running?

Uncommon & progresiv: If a kid is snoring at 3 it is likely to progress to a point where it causes sleep apnea even if it is not present now. T&a mass grows faster than the kid until ~8y. If your kid is grumpy, dozes a lot during the day & the pauses you mention last >10 sec, you have a problem now. Record the snoring pattern & seek out a consultation with an ent. The humidifier is unlikely to help. ...Read more

Hi I have a 3 year old daughter who is a restless sleeper, snores, talks in her sleep and always sleeps in weird positions could she have sleep apnea?

Yes: A 3 yo that snores will likely develop sleep apnea within a year or so if she hasn't done so already. I would schedule a visit with an ENT and bring a recording of the sleep sounds. A sleep study may or may not be needed when this is reviewed. Good luck. ...Read more

Likely a dream: The simplest most likely cause is a dream. If the kid is short of breath, coughing a lot, looking bluish in the face, lethargic, vomiting, in pain or otherwise not appearing well, go see the doctor. ...Read more
