Is Imodium Better Than Pepto For Diarrhea
Anti-diarrheal meds: Depends on the individual and the situation. With heart-burn like symptoms, kaopectate is good at coating the upper intestinal tract - equivalent to pepto-bismul. Imodium (loperamide) is a synthetic anti-diarrheal medicine. If you're having diarrhea from a virus or soiled food etc, let the diarrhea pass without taking meds - drink plenty of fluids / hydrate. If chronic of on-going, see a gastroenterologist. ...Read more

What will happen if I take pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) for more than the 2 days it recommends?
Aspirin Toxicity: Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) can cause some Aspirin like effects such as easy bleeding or bruising (though this is quite rare), ringing of the ears, and eventual stomach irritation. Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) will turn your stools black and can do the same to your tongue as well. The warning is on there because ongoing diarrhea is a sign you should seek medical attention and not continue simply taking over the counter medicine. ...Read more

What to take for long lasting indigestion, pepto bismol, (bismuth subsalicylate) gas x, and rolaids haven't worked. Has lasted for 5 days.
Effective at which?: Kaopectate basically is pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). Both have bismuth salicylic acid which may have some antibacterial properties. Both are Aspirin products though and cannot be given to children or pregnant women or those otherwise intolerant of aspirin. Immodium does not treat the root cause of the diarrhea but has great stopping power. It wins. ...Read more

Yes, maybe: Anti-diarrheal drugs are helpful in chemotherapy induced diarrhea. However, need to be sure that the diarrhea is from chemotherapy and not infectious -- such as clostridium difficile toxin (cdt) induced diarrhea. Cdt pcr can detect. In that case the bodies natural reaction is to get rid of the toxin by voiding with diarrhea. That diarrhea needs antibiotics for a potentially prolonged time. ...Read more

Miralax (polyethylene glycol): I recommend drinking lots of water and using miralax, (polyethylene glycol) this type of fiber works with your body and doesn't necessarily force you to use the bathroom but lets you decide when you want to go. Each person has different reactions to fiber and some can cause bloating to some while others to have the same symptoms, so it is important to try a few to see which one works best for you. ...Read more

The : The Imodium (loperamide) is a good idea. A small amount of gatorade can be helpful, but too much can worsen diarrhea because of the glucose content. Try tea, water, and very small amounts of gatorade. Eating bananas, rice, and dry toast can be helpful. Avoid fruits and vegetables for at least a week. If your diarrhea worsens, you have fever or vomiting, or if you have been on antibiotics prior to this diarrhea, then you will have to see a doctor. ...Read more

Immodium seems to help with chronic diarrhea after surgery. However, it appears to cause severe bloating. Would pepto bismal help with bloating?
Assess your diet: Imodium (loperamide) is a motility modifier. It takes the number of squeeze messages in the gut & slows them down, so things are pushed along slower. If you are bloating, it is likely this effects how the gas your digestion makes moves along in the same way.You need to reduce gas producing foods in your diet (like cauliflower, beans) & take a probiotic to alter your gas production.Pepto may have a placebo effect ...Read more
What's the difference between Immodium and Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) in terms of anti-diarrhea? Would either help with lower abdominal cramp + minor diarrhea?
Totally different: Imodium's active ingredient is loperamide, which slows down intestinal motility. Pepto-Bismol uses bismuth, which decreases secretions into the intestines. Slowing of the intestines can actually make cramping worse, and make it harder for the body to eliminate a GI infection, but may do a better job of preventing dehydration when vomiting is also present. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Rule out antibiotics:
The mucus suggests coliitis. Are you taking antibiotics? If so you would be at risk for c diff colitis which needs specific treatment.

Diarrhea for 5 days with no other symptoms. Any thoughts or suggestions on what it is or how to stop it. Imodium (loperamide) is not working. ?
Yes: The bismuth in Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) can cause black stools. This can be concerning because blood in the stool can also appear as black stool. But if you took the Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) do not be alarmed with the black stool unless it persists well after the Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) is out of your system. ...Read more
