Immodium seems to help with chronic diarrhea after surgery. However, it appears to cause severe bloating. Would pepto bismal help with bloating?
Assess your diet: Imodium (loperamide) is a motility modifier. It takes the number of squeeze messages in the gut & slows them down, so things are pushed along slower. If you are bloating, it is likely this effects how the gas your digestion makes moves along in the same way.You need to reduce gas producing foods in your diet (like cauliflower, beans) & take a probiotic to alter your gas production.Pepto may have a placebo effect ...Read more

The : The Imodium (loperamide) is a good idea. A small amount of gatorade can be helpful, but too much can worsen diarrhea because of the glucose content. Try tea, water, and very small amounts of gatorade. Eating bananas, rice, and dry toast can be helpful. Avoid fruits and vegetables for at least a week. If your diarrhea worsens, you have fever or vomiting, or if you have been on antibiotics prior to this diarrhea, then you will have to see a doctor. ...Read more

What's the difference between Immodium and Pepto Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) in terms of anti-diarrhea? Would either help with lower abdominal cramp + minor diarrhea?
Totally different: Imodium's active ingredient is loperamide, which slows down intestinal motility. Pepto-Bismol uses bismuth, which decreases secretions into the intestines. Slowing of the intestines can actually make cramping worse, and make it harder for the body to eliminate a GI infection, but may do a better job of preventing dehydration when vomiting is also present. ...Read more
I am having lots of mucus in my stool, intermittent diarrhea and constipation and stomach pain. It goes away with Imodium (loperamide) and pepto but returns.
Pepto + Imodium (loperamide): This should be no problem and often these two drugs are prescribed together. I would recommend that you space each drug as far apart from the other drug as possible. This way the pepto bismol will not interfere with the system absorption of the imodium (loperamide). ...Read more

Both are Aspirin products though and cannot be given to children or pregnant women or those otherwise intolerant of aspirin. Immodium does not treat the root cause of the diarrhea but has great stopping power. It wins. ...Read more
