Doctor insights on:
Is Ig G Herpes Test Accurate
Herpes: No; Cell culture or PCR test may give a false-negative result if the sores have begun healing or if you are recently infected. It takes several weeks for HSV antibodies to show up in the blood. PCR and cell culture tests show that you have been exposed to the virus at some point. Your doctor may choose to do both or neither based on the physical examination. ...Read more

Are IgG blood tests accurate for herpes? If they are and it's not herpes my bf and i had than what could it of been?
Igg testing is the common way viral infections are tested for. These tests are in general very accurate, except early in an infection. A mature (ogg) antibody can take three to six months to reach maturity.
Without seeing or knowing more about what 'you and your boyfriend' had i cannot answer the second part of your question. ...Read more

How accurate are negative herpes blood IgG test results after 3 months? My obgyn said I should be fine but i want to make sure i really am negative

How accurate are negative herpes blood IgG test results after 3 months? My obgyn said I should be fine but i want to make sure i really am negative.
Herpes simplex: It would be surprising to see many people negative for herpes serology in this day and age. If it is, great. But even if it were positive that is no guarantee that you will ever get active lesions. Despite their absence, however, if you do have herpes in your body you may excrete the virus and infect others. Good luck. This is complicated. ...Read more
What is the most accurate blood test for herpes i made one which cames out IgG +ve IgM -ve but it didn't distinguished if it is oral or gentel?
Ask doctor again: Igm antibodies tell us you have not just recently contracted herpes. Igg antibodies positive mean old herpes. Almost everybody in the country has cold sores because of grandmas kissing babies/etc. Oral is 2/3rds type i herpes & 1/3 type ii these days & vice versa for genital. This is only important to know for future reference because type ii is much more severe &.Frequent. Treatment is the same. ...Read more
How accurate are IGG blood test for herpes for person never having an outbreak? Partner tested positive for hsv2.
It depends...: The HSV IgG blood tests are good but not perfect. With the most common test (HerpeSelect®), strong positive (HSV2 index 3.5 or more) is proof of infection, regardless of symptoms. Negative (under 0.9) also is conclusive. Index >1.1 is officially positive, but many results 1.1-3.5 are false. Other IgG tests less well studied. Such uncertainties are why HSV blood tests often are controversial. ...Read more

How long should you wait for a IgG herpes test? If i've already had symptoms will it show up? It's been about 11 weeks since possible exposure.
Usually yes: Once in a while it takes up to 4 months for the HSV IgG test to become positive. If you had typical herpes symptoms, another test might be a good idea. But if you had no symptoms and you were just looking for reassuance after a high risk exposure, I would recommend against any further testing. ...Read more
What does a 9.9 on a herpes IGG test mean? That number is higher than other results posted in forums so I wanted to see if that is a normal result.
Depends on test: There are several HSV IgG antibody tests, with different numbers for positive results. The most common is HerpeSelect®, for which 9.9 is strongly positive. For other tests this may be negative. If you have the lab report, it should show numbers for negative, indeterminate, and positive, separately for HSV1 and HSV2. Or contact and discuss with the doctor or lab where test was done. Good luck! ...Read more

Diagnosed with herpes in 5/2012. I got the IgG test done 5 months later 10/2012. It came back negative. What does this mean? Is there a better test?
Antibodies: A positive herpes igg means you have antibodies to the herpes virus. If you test positive for igg and negative for igm, your herpes infection is probably not recent - i.e. From the past 2 months. The test is not always accurate; if you have never had a herpes infection it could be a false positive, and you should have it repeated. ...Read more
My test is positive for herpes 1 and negative for herpes 2 (all igg) but also positive IgM herpes too. Would you say I have type 1 or 2 ?
How long does it take for IgG herpes antibodies to show up? What's the most recent your exposure could have been if you test with low amounts?
I got <0.9 for IgG but 1.5+ for IgM for herpes test. What does that mean? Do I have herpes?Which type? What to do to be sure & what medication to take?
Likely: Igm is produced first in response to an antigen, so suggests you are recently infected (within weeks); as to which, test should reflect hsv1 ("oral") or hsv2 ("genital")--but hsv2 is the more commonly tested for type. . Your dr will prescribe antiviral best for your situation: Acyclovir (zovirax), valacyclovir (valtrex) or Famciclovir (famvir). ...Read more

What does it mean when I have an index value of 20.9 for a herpes i, ii, and IgG test? Lab results
Old infection: I do not know the reference value of the lab that did the test but i assume this is higher than normal and is interpreted as reactive. It means at one point in your life, you have been exposed to both varieties of hepres -i generally responsible for 'cold sores' and ii, generally responsible for genital lesions. However with diverse sexual practicess, they are becoming more interchangeable. ...Read more

More info needed: The herpes blood tests are complex. Get the details from your doctor the re-post a new question, including the HSV1 index vaue, HSV2 index value, and the reference values for each. If you don't understand the numbers, just post exactly what the lab report shows. Many entirely healthy people have positive HSV1 tests.
