I have arthiritis and find that taking an NSAID helps. Is taking an NSAID daily ok? If so, is it better to take 800 mg ibuprofen or 25 mg diclofenic?

I have arthiritis and find that taking an NSAID helps. Is taking an NSAID daily ok? If so, is it better to take 800 mg ibuprofen or 25 mg diclofenic?

? Ibuprofen is safer: Some studies, including an FDA study several years ago with 1.5 million people followed over many years, show ibuprofen to be safer, cardiac wise, than diclofenac. The safest in terms of cardiac issues AND GI side effects is celecoxib, celebrex. Regardless, your PCP should monitor your kidney and liver functions annually. ...Read more

Can regular use of nsaid painkillers, i.E. Advil, (ibuprofen) cause ulcers or other problems?

Can regular use of nsaid painkillers, i.E. Advil, (ibuprofen) cause ulcers or other problems?

NSAID Side effects: Nsaid's are relatively safe when used short term & when there are no underlying contraindications. Side effects may be encountered in short term use, but tend to be more worrisome in the long-term. Gi toxicity, fluid-retention, hypertension, heart, kidney & liver damage, etc. Have all been linked to prolonged nsaid's. Rebound headaches can be seen after a week or 2. Treat the cause, not symptoms. ...Read more

Hello I have recently developed an allergy to ibuprofen and aspirin I was wondering specifically what other nsaids can I take?

Allergy: We would not try other nsaid's if you are allergic to the two. I would recommend tylenol (acetaminophen) as the next option. Make sure what you are calling an allergy actually is an allergy. Talk to your doctor. Stomach upset and nausea is not a n allergy while hives or trouble breathing is. ...Read more

I've had psuedoallergies to nsaids. If I go thru a desensitization program for aspirin, does that also allow me to resume ibuprofen products?

Interesting.: If the desensitization is succesful for asa it will probably be succesful for the nsaids as well. Before attempting this it might be worthwhile to consider three meds which generally have very low potential to induce pseudoallergy:
salsalate,
choline magnesium trisalicylate,
diflunisal.

Ask your doc. ...Read more

If I get a few tiny hives from both ibuprofen and aspirin, does that mean I can't take any nsaids at all? Also, I get hives without any meds at times

No: There are 6 classes of nsaids. Aspirin (salicylic acid group) & Ibuprofen (proprionic acid group) are in 2 different classes. You may not get hives if you take an NSAID from one of the other classes. Tread carefully though. Repeat exposure to a med you are allergic to can lead to more serious side effects (breathing/swallowing troubles). Consider seeing allergist for testing. ...Read more

Is there really any difference between 600, and 800 mg ibuprofen? What is the strongest NSAID available OTC?

Minimal: I believe there is minimal difference between the 2 dosages but some people might feel a little better with the 800 mg vs the 600 mg. Aleve is the other most common NSAID and again I think the compatible. Some people may respond better to one versus another. Good luck ...Read more

Upgraded warnings on NSAIDs have me concerned. Advil (ibuprofen) always wks for me @ recommended dose on pkg, but now afraid to take it. Is it really that unsafe?

Safe: Advil (ibuprofen) and similar medications are safe but all medications come with potential adverse effects. You are correct that you shouldn't exceed the recommended dose on the bottle but chronic use (daily for more than 6 weeks) requires discussion with your doctor to screen for side effects and consider alternatives. Could you take ibuprofen (an nsaid) and bupropion (steroid) if you are taking entocort (a corticosteroid)?

Yes: bupropion is not a steroid, and I am not aware of any contraindications to your drug combinations, but would just express some concern that steroids increase the chances of stomach ulcers and bleeding, and NSAIDs may worsen this. Talk to your doctor about using something to protect your stomach (sucralfate, prilosec and others) if stomach upset is present, or even as prevention. ...Read more

I keep hearing that I can still use certain kinds of nsaids even tho I get hives from ibuprofen & aspirin. So which nsaid can I take?

NSAID Allergy: Even though there are several classes of nsaids, the fact that you have already had a similar severe reaction with two of the classes (ibuprofen & aspirin), it would be dangerous to try other nsaids. It is also likely that subsequent reactions could be worse than what you previously experienced. ...Read more

I have suddenly become allergic to NSAID's like Naproxen and Ibuprofen after years of taking them without problems. Can this reverse itself?

It depends: There are about 6 defined immune-mediated allergic syndromes related to NSAIDs. However, these mostly do not involve "sudden" changes in susceptibility. I suspect a non-immune mediated cause, such as a non-immune pharmacologic side effect. Impossible to guess further without more information. ...Read more
