Is High Cholesterol Bad For You
Complicated: The conventional wisdom is that HDL helps to remove cholesterol from your arteries and epidemiological studies clearly show that the lower the hdl, the higher the risk and vice versa but drugs that raise the HDL have had disappointing results making the conventional wisdom suspect. It may just be a marker for something else. Bottom line: we're not sure why but it is. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Depends on a lot: 1st, it depends how high. If HDL is over 85, then yes, LDL can be very high - for most people. 2nd, what other risk factors do you have? With high bp, smoking, diabetes and obesity, then the hdl-to-ldl ratio should be better because risk is so much higher. See a lipid specialist and consider a 'fractionated lipid panel' to help determine risk. ...Read more
Avoid too much.: Cholesterol is not 'bad', all our cells contain and require cholesterol to keep membranes healthy in our bodies. It's over-consumption of cholesterol which gets us into trouble. The extra cholesterol lodges in arteries, eventually causing narrowing which can lead to blood clots (heart attacks, strokes). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Many reasons.: The main reason is an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Higher LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and lower HDL cholesterol increse this risk. This can have serious consequernces, like heart disease, and stroke. The national cholesterol education program helps provide guidelines of how to reduce the intake of total and saturated fat for lower cholesterol to lower risk for atherosclerosis. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Does low cholesterol prevent atherosclerosis? If I have good cholesterol, meaning high good cholesterol and low bad cholesterol, will that prevent atherosclerosis?
Possibly: Atherosclerosis is caused by a variety of factors, of which cholesterol and triglycerides are two major components. Therefore, if you have low total cholesterol and an appropriate balance between LDL and hdl, you should reduce your risk substantially. But, you may still have development of atherosclerosis later in life. Still, here less is more :). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Yes: It'll mostly be the cholesterol that's doing it. High sugars can cause damage to the heart arteries too, but i'm unaware of low sugar doing the same. That said, most people with documented low sugars are diabetics taking meds for the condition, and such patients almost invariably have a degree of heart artery involvement from their condition. ...Read more
I know LDL cholesterol is known as the "bad" artery clogging cholesterol, but are there healthy levels that are good for you?
Depends on Particles: Ldl can be estimated by cholesterol (ldl-c) or measured by particle number (apob or NMR ldl-p). However, ldl-c and ldl-p do not equally predict cardiovascular risk. When ldl-c and ldl-p values disagree (due to cholesterol variability per particle) cvd risk tracks with LDL particle number, not ldl-c values. Ideal ldl-p values are <1000 nmol/l for high risk patients and <1300 nmol for everyone else. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

What is a good cholesterol reading is 200 good 330 to high 150 to low and be honest are statin drugs really any good for cholesterol tha?
Risk factors: The optimum cholesterol level depends on your risk factors for cardiovascular disease. If you do not have risk factors, 200 may be okay, provided your HDL levels is normal or better yet, high. Statins do help, but it would be prudent to consult a doctor about your risk factors before entertaining any effort to change your cholesterol. ...Read more
My cholesterol is high but the ratio is good. Should I consider a statin or is it ok to do nothing? Which statin and why?
More info needed: The use of statins (or any other medications) depends on many factors, such as family history, other medical problems, current state of health, other risk factors, etc. It also depends on your exact ratio vs. "a low ratio". Discuss this with your doctor. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not really: Very low LDL cholesterol levels (less than 40) can occur genetically (hypobetalipoproteinemia), in which case such low values are present from birth, or in response to medical therapies. In both settings individuals have normal development, sexual function, and show no specific adverse effects. Low levels are sometimes noted due to severe illness (cancer, etc), but that is a different issue. ...Read more
