Hernia Surgery (Definition)

There are a variety or several types of hernias, and many are repaired differently. A hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall (such as inguinal, umbilical, incisional) or diaphragm (hiatal hernia). Surgery to repair the hernia can involve use of sutures, and possible use of mesh. Open or laparoscopic surgery can be a means to repair hernias, with laparoscopic ...Read more

How long do you have to wear the support underwear after hernia surgery? And is it ok I take it off for a day?

How long do you have to wear the support underwear after hernia surgery? And is it ok I take it off for a day?

Unique question: This is not a normal situation for those of us who work in american medicine. Most hernia surgeries are done laparoscopically and there is little to no post operative pain or problems. I would bet, however, that your surgeon gave you post op instructions that should answer your question. If they did not this is a question to direct to your surgeon. ...Read more

My umbilical hernia surgery hurts when I bend my core to the right. It's been a year since surgery. Only happens the day after I workout. Recurrence?

Possible, but.. ..: It's possible that you tore something that could lead to a recurrence but if there is no bulge or obvious hernia sticking out than you are probably ok. Bruising and muscle strain can feel the same way. And 'tightness' can be confused with pain. Tightness is normal, pain is not.

Try generic ibuprofen for a week or so and see if it improves. If not improving or if worse, see your surgeon ...Read more

My 7 week old has severe gas. He just had hernia surgery, and I'm afraid hrs will have another. He grunts all day and night. Any suggestions?

Mylecon: Any gassy infant may benefit from some mylecon drops, available over the counter. They are basically a soapy material that helps the gas come together & form a bigger pocket that can move along faster. The medication stays in the intestines so side effects are essentially non existent. 7wk old babies grunt & squeak & make all sorts of other noises all the time & it doesn't mean anything bad. ...Read more

I had hernia surgery at the belly button one week and a day ago. My pain has been increasing to the point I want to go to the er.

Get it checked: Pain after hernia repair is common but increasing pain may signal a wound infection or an early recurrence of the hernia possibly with intestine caught in it. While these are uncommon events (most umbilical hernias are straightforward and uncomplicated) they can happen and are important to identify and treat promptly. The best course of action is to return to your surgeon for a check. ...Read more

Ideally 2 weeks: Ideally you should be clean 2 weeks before general anesthesia The risk is you have a cardiac arrhythmia and die on the table. It is never a good idea to hide your drug use from your physicians because the drugs in your system interfere with the drugs and treatments he/she provides. They may drug test you before the surgery and if positive cancel the surgery. But it's better than dying ...Read more

I have been experiencing a burning or stabbing pain 3 weeks after inguinal hernia surgery. It comes and goes a few times a day. Is this normal?

Not really: Call your doctor, surgeon to let her/him know of this. You want to make sure the mesh is in place and not out of place stabbing you, or pushing on something that it shouldn't be. You have 90 days of post op care that's prepaid with your surgery. So, don't delay. Your surgeon needs to know this information. Good luck! ...Read more
