Fever/spots/pain: Hfm is a viral gut infection. Some kids can have it & run a brief temperature & never show other symptoms. Some have fever, localized spots on their wrists & nothing else. Some have terrible mouth sores, spots on wrists/forearms/legs feet & around the bottom & have cramping & loose stools. So fever, loose stools &cramps, amount & location of blisters seem to be the main variables.See 1 more doctor answer
Hand washing: Hand foot and mouth is spread by coughing, sneezing and saliva. The best way to prevent spread to others is to wash hands frequently and avoid contact with sick persons. Toys, contaminated with saliva need to be cleaned. Children with fever and mouth sores should be excluded from daycare. 24 hours after the fever is gone it is reasonable to allow the child back into daycare.
It is a virus: Hand foot and mouth is a virus and resolves on its own. Go for a visit if he has fever that is getting worse or is miserable. Sometimes a child can get a secondary problem like an ear infection. If he is eating well and doing ok you can watch him at home. My 2 young children have hand foot and mouth disease. Is it harmful to me if I am 7.5 months pregnant?
Should be fine: 95% of kids by age 3 have had this and as high as 99% by the time you get to kindergarten. What that boils down to is you almost 100% have had this and are immune, having antibodies that protect both you and the unborn baby. You have a better chance winning the lottery than coming down with the illness, so don't worry!See 1 more doctor answer
My granddaughter has hand foot and mouth disease. Can adults catch the disease if the immune system is comprised?
YES: Hand foot and mouth disease is a viral illness not to be confused with the cattle illness hoof and mouth. It is contagious and an adult can get it if he or she has not had a previous infection with the virus or if immunosuppressed. It is a self limited illness that only on very rare occasions can cause serious complications.See 2 more doctor answers
Just informed my nephew has hand, foot, and mouth disease. My 12 month old and 4 year old were exposed but are acting fine. Will they get it to?
Maybe: Maybe not. There are no rules here. People are exposed to all kinds of viruses but never develop symptoms. Just don't be surprised if they do. Treatment is supportive, tylenol/ibuprofen for fever, push fluids, (popsicles are good here). Stay out of school or daycare until fever gone and no new lesions. Wash hands frequently and well! Good luck.
