Is gabapentin a barbiturate or benzodiazepine?

Neither: It is an anti-seizure med. However, it may have some effects on the GABA receptor, though this may not be it's main mechanism of action. It can be sedating, like the other 2 classes of drugs. ...Read more

What is gabapentin? Is it a barbiturate or a benzodiazepine?

What is gabapentin? Is it a barbiturate or a benzodiazepine?

Neither: Gabapentin is used to treat partial seizures, pain related to post herpetic neuralgia as well as neuropathic pain. While it does modulate the activity of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, gaba, it's mechanism of action is significantly different from that of a benzodiazepine or barbiturate. As a result does not result in physiologic dependence. ...Read more

What's the reason for giving opiate-addicted neonates barbiturates as opposed to benzodiazepines?

What's the reason for giving opiate-addicted neonates barbiturates as opposed to benzodiazepines?

Various reasons: Infants withdrawing from opiates have been treated with many types of drugs. The best-with the least amount of complications is opium drops or phenobarbital. Benzodiazapines have been associated with respiratory complications and are not recommended. Abstinence syndrome is complicated and should be supervised by an experienced Neonatologist. Management may take some time so try to be patient. ...Read more

Wrong use for opiate: Your question, if there was one, seems to have been cut off. But it appears you might have been leading to the idea of using hydrocodone for sleep, due to "bad reactions" to other medications. Please work with your own physician on this problem -- you may need a sleep study to discern what's happening. If you're using hydrocodone for sleep you may have dependency on opiates. ...Read more

What is the difference between barbiturates v benzodiazepines?

What is the difference between barbiturates v benzodiazepines?

Both are: Sedative hypnotic's and both enhance the activity of inhibitory neurotransmitters in the cns. Both exert action at the GABA receptor complex. Barbiturates also block excitatory neurotransmitter. While the chemical structures are different, the most significant differences are the wider therapeutic window, lower drug tolerance and lower propensity for abuse with the benzodiazepines. ...Read more

Is there a difference between barbiturates and benzodiazepines?

Yes, very different: Barbiturates are sedatives with a low "therapeutic index", meaning that a toxic dose isn't much higher than an effective dose. Benzodiazepines are tranquilizers (some sedating, some not) with a higher therapeutic index, i.e., safer. Chemically they are completely different. However, both can be addictive, with tolerance developing with repeated doses. ...Read more

If you receive a epidural during labor, will you test positive for barbituates and benzodiazapans? Drug screen was given after epidural was given!

If you receive a epidural during labor, will you test positive for barbituates and benzodiazapans? Drug screen was given after epidural was given!

No: Patient's who have an epidural for labor typically receive local anesthetic and may also receive an opioid narcotic. The exact medications depend on the patient, labor, anesthesiologist, obstetrician, and practice setting. I would not expect that you received barbiturates or benzodiazepines unless the epidural was also used for a c-section and those medications were administered after delivery. ...Read more

Is it best to stagger new medications, i.e. start one a week or so before introducing another. I have started Gabapentin and have Baclofen prescribed. Maybe I should wait to add Baclofen until I've gotten to a full dose of Gabapentin?

Is it best to stagger new medications, i.e. start one a week or so before introducing another. I have started Gabapentin and have Baclofen prescribed. Maybe I should wait to add Baclofen until I've gotten to a full dose of Gabapentin?

If possible, yes: It is helpful if your Doctor agrees-let them know and discuss with them, as if you start both meds at the same time, you may not know which one genuinely helps and or if you get an adverse reaction/side effect, you would not know which one caused it, etc. Best wishes. ...Read more

How can I get barbiturates prescribed?

How can I get barbiturates prescribed?

Prescribed for what?: There is really only one condition for which a barbiturate can be a drug-of-choice, and that is generalized seizures, for which either Phenobarbital or Primidone (which is metabolized into phenobarbital) can be a first line drug. Barbiturates are mostly complexed with tylenol (acetaminophen) and caffeine in migraine pills like Fioricet etc which I believe is an irrational and dangerous drug. Many better choices. ...Read more
