Is Gabapentin A Barbiturate Or Benzodiazepine
Neither: Gabapentin is used to treat partial seizures, pain related to post herpetic neuralgia as well as neuropathic pain. While it does modulate the activity of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, gaba, it's mechanism of action is significantly different from that of a benzodiazepine or barbiturate. As a result does not result in physiologic dependence. ...Read more
Just out of interest & in your personal opinion, which benzodiazepine or barbiturate has the strongest anxiolytic effect compared to others mg per mg?
Various reasons: Infants withdrawing from opiates have been treated with many types of drugs. The best-with the least amount of complications is opium drops or phenobarbital. Benzodiazapines have been associated with respiratory complications and are not recommended. Abstinence syndrome is complicated and should be supervised by an experienced Neonatologist. Management may take some time so try to be patient. ...Read more
I seem to have a bad reaction to meds like ambien, gabapentin, and most if not all benzodiazepine's. The only meds that have ever calmed me down consistantly so I can get some sleep have been pain killers. I have a script for hydrcodones for several badl
Wrong use for opiate: Your question, if there was one, seems to have been cut off. But it appears you might have been leading to the idea of using hydrocodone for sleep, due to "bad reactions" to other medications. Please work with your own physician on this problem -- you may need a sleep study to discern what's happening. If you're using hydrocodone for sleep you may have dependency on opiates. ...Read more
Both are: Sedative hypnotic's and both enhance the activity of inhibitory neurotransmitters in the cns. Both exert action at the GABA receptor complex. Barbiturates also block excitatory neurotransmitter. While the chemical structures are different, the most significant differences are the wider therapeutic window, lower drug tolerance and lower propensity for abuse with the benzodiazepines. ...Read more
Yes, very different: Barbiturates are sedatives with a low "therapeutic index", meaning that a toxic dose isn't much higher than an effective dose. Benzodiazepines are tranquilizers (some sedating, some not) with a higher therapeutic index, i.e., safer. Chemically they are completely different. However, both can be addictive, with tolerance developing with repeated doses. ...Read more
Similar effect: Both are calming agents. However, they have a different mechanism of action. The side effects of barbiturates are more dangerous than those of benzodiazepines. ...Read more

Would switching from xanax to Gabapentin help reduce my pain further from fibromyalgia but also help with withdrawals from benzodiazapine to help avoid seizures? Are they safe to take together in low doses otherwise?

If you receive a epidural during labor, will you test positive for barbituates and benzodiazapans? Drug screen was given after epidural was given!
No: Patient's who have an epidural for labor typically receive local anesthetic and may also receive an opioid narcotic. The exact medications depend on the patient, labor, anesthesiologist, obstetrician, and practice setting. I would not expect that you received barbiturates or benzodiazepines unless the epidural was also used for a c-section and those medications were administered after delivery. ...Read more

Is it best to stagger new medications, i.e. start one a week or so before introducing another. I have started Gabapentin and have Baclofen prescribed. Maybe I should wait to add Baclofen until I've gotten to a full dose of Gabapentin?
If possible, yes: It is helpful if your Doctor agrees-let them know and discuss with them, as if you start both meds at the same time, you may not know which one genuinely helps and or if you get an adverse reaction/side effect, you would not know which one caused it, etc. Best wishes. ...Read more
Prescribed for what?: There is really only one condition for which a barbiturate can be a drug-of-choice, and that is generalized seizures, for which either Phenobarbital or Primidone (which is metabolized into phenobarbital) can be a first line drug. Barbiturates are mostly complexed with tylenol (acetaminophen) and caffeine in migraine pills like Fioricet etc which I believe is an irrational and dangerous drug. Many better choices. ...Read more
Sedatives: Teh class of barbiturates are sedatives and not used as often today as in the past. Newer agents with fewer side effects and less abuse potential are now available. Most use in now limited to hospitals. ...Read more
Many uses: Gabapentin aka Neurontin (gabapentin) is considered an anti epileptic, but is rarely used for epilepsy except as an adjunct to other medications. It is more commonly used for neuropathic pain or as a muscle relaxant. It's exact mechanism of action is unknown except that it blocks voltage-dependent calcium channels and modulates excitatory neurotransmitter release ...Read more
Unlikely: Benzo's are more likely to be associated with hallucinations, especially in overdoses or during drug withdrawal. Many report nightmares or vivid dreams while taking benzo's. Only one mention of benzo's used to treat auditory hallucinations in schizophrenic pt concluded effect resulted from muscle relaxing & anxiolytic effects. ...Read more
Anxiety, generally: Benzodiazepines are a class of medications known as anxiolytics meaning anti-anxiety. Many who take benzos do so chronically for anxiety disorders that are long-standing. Others take benzos as needed to sleep or when anxiety suddenly becomes overwhelming. As for how to have this class of medication prescribed, I recommend an open conversation with your doctor. ...Read more

Variety of uses: Gabapentin has been used for epileptic seizures, trigeminal neuralgia, post-herpetic neuralgia, peripheral nerve pain, fibromyalgia, and even bipolar disorder. It is an older medicine with dosing limitations at a max of about 2400 mg. It has been largely supplanted by the newer drug lyrica (pregabalin). ...Read more
