Not only can, should!: I advise all my patients to take probiotics while on antibiotics. I advise everyone take Sacchromyces Boulardii (sold as FloraStor) and one with multiple strains of acidophilus/bifidus. Look for ones with at least 20 billion bacteria. Having said that, there are not usually many side effects, if you do decide to try them. Good luck ...Read more
I'm taking fluconazole for a nasty, persistent yeast infection. Is it safe to take garlic and coconut supplements with this medicine?
Is it better to start with a OTC yeast infection cream for a yeast infection caused from antibiotics or can a probiotic like acidophilus be effective?
Not recommended: Colds are almost always caused by viruses. They are self limited and do not respond to antibacterial antibiotics which should never be used. Bronchitis is likewise usually a viral infection and should not be treated with antibiotics unless severe or prolonged. If bronchitis needed antibiotic treatment Clindamycin would not be a good choice. Ceftin, (cefuroxime) vantin, zithromax or Augmentin would be better. ...Read more

Probiotics: The intestinal flora and the interactions of various organisms is often not easy to predict and the introduction of Saccharomyces and Lactobacilli or other bacilli and which takes over will depend upon multiple poorly defined factors, and whether the patient is also receiving antibiotics for other reasons. There seems no contraindication to taking both, but simply eating Yogurt is quite effective. ...Read more
Neither: Usually a vaginal infection (bacterial vaginosis - bv) is better treated with an antibiotic with anaerobic coverage (common vaginal bacteria). Amoxicillin is better for streptococcus or gram positive bacteria. I hope that helps. Take care. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is probiotic powder effective? Is buttermilk or curd a probiotic?Any natural probiotics?Doc has asked me to take probiotics but need a reliable brand
Perhaps, marketing: yet few clinical trials, little reliable data. Like many OTC products, labels does not even match the contents. While some data about probiotic benefits with clostridium difficile & ulcerative colitis exists, few reliable brands. Thus natural fermented products likely a better option for now. Study the: "Human Microbiome Project" for insights; >another decade to sort out some of the complexity. ...Read more
