Is down syndrome dominant or recessive?

Neither

Down_syndrome
Down syndrome happens when an extra 21 chromosome is present in all the cells of the body. It happens before conception when the donor egg fails to shed one of its 21 chromosomes in the formation of the egg & the male 21 joins the female pair & creates an embryo with 3 number 21's.

Down syndrome is neither dominant nor recessive. Down syndrome occurs due to there being 3 number 21.

Can you please define down syndrome inheritance pattern ?

There is none

Down_syndrome
You do not inherit DS from your parents in the traditional dominant or recessive fashion. During formation of the egg, only one of a pair of the 23 separate chromosomes is present so the sperm bringing 23 will reestablish the 46. DS occurs when an extra 21 (or piece of a 21) is present in the egg after conception. This is a chromosome number change, not an inherited trait.

Is down syndrome inherited?

Not usually

Genetic
The only way to inherit Down Syndrome is if one parent has Down Syndrome and passes 2 copies of chromosome 21. Few people with DS reproduce, so that is not usually a factor.

what are the mechanisms of down syndrome?

Several possible

Open-uri20121112-31776-13mpbk6
The features of Down Syndrome seem to be dependent on the addition of one extra segment of a 21 chromosome. You can get there several ways. The traditional DS (~95%) has 3 copies of a 21 chromosome. About 4% have the specific extra 21 piece stuck on a regular chromosome.About 1% have a mosaic of some normal and some 21 trisomy in variable amounts.

What are the chances of down syndrome at 40?

1/100 births

Down_syndrome
As above the rate of DS births are lowest in the early 20's at about 1/2000 with a gradual increase in risks that hit 1/100 at 40.There is always a baseline risk of about 4% of an unexpected outcome with any pregnancy. This must be added to specific age related risk. A visit with a genetic counselor can identify specific risk for any couple.

Could down syndrome be passed onto offspring?

Not from male

Down_syndrome
Males with Down syndrome are infertile as they have a defect inspermatogenesis. Females with Down syndrome are somewhat sub-fertile, however tend to have many complications fo pregnancy including miscarriage. Offspring of women with Down syndrome have a 50% risk of having the syndrome themselves.

What is down syndrome?

Chromosome defect

Open-uri20121005-27826-7dl9ks
DS is one of the more common chromosome(C) defects that can survive pregnancy (many others miscarry).Eggs are supposed to have a single 21C & combine with the 21 from dads normal sperm. Here a pair of moms 21C +dad's 21 creates a baby with the extra 21C in all tissues. This extra material confuses the creation of body parts causing DS..Various prenatal tests can pick up signs early on.
