What do you recommend if I have a big cut on my leg and I have put savlon antiseptic cream on it, and I wanted to know if it was the same as neosporin?

Post popping pimple I applied undiluted dettol for 20 mints. Boroline antiseptic cream for another 10 mints without washing dettol. I have dark patch.

Best to see a doctor: It is difficult to say if the dark patch will be permanent or not. It is best to see a doctor and have them evaluate your skin. It is best not to use chemicals that are not meant for the skin on your skin, especially face area. Good luck. ...Read more

I'm not sure, but should over-the-counter antibiotic creams such as neosporin be outlawed?

I'm not sure, but should over-the-counter antibiotic creams such as neosporin be outlawed?

I don't think so: These antibiotic ointments should be used sparingly and under certain circumstances, usually in deeper cuts and abrasions. I don't think they should be outlawed because they can be very beneficial if used properly. Not every cut needs a band aid and neosporin. If anything they should discontinue the sale of antibacterial soaps. ...Read more

My son had a tick bite. I had to carefully remove it. Head and all and put alcohol to clean, neosporin and itch cream will it be ok?

My son had a tick bite. I had to carefully remove it. Head and all and put alcohol to clean, neosporin and itch cream will it be ok?

Simple Care: When our protective skin is injured/opened, then the delicate internal environment is exposed to the harsh external environment. Covering it with a clean dressing is the way to go changing it every other day or so. Avoid scratching. Anti-itch creams help. Also, stay away from peroxide, alcohol, betadine, hibiclens, bleach solutions and other irritating things. ...Read more

What cream can I use for anal fissure? Neosporin? Does it cause antibiotic resistance?

What cream can I use for anal fissure? Neosporin? Does it cause antibiotic resistance?

Not Neosporin!: Neosporin has not been found useful in treating anal fissures. A surprising cream that does seem to help heal anal fissures is Nitroglycerin! This medication is used for treating angina but it has also been found to relax the anal sphincter and also increase blood flow to the fissure which aids in healing. See your doctor or a proctologist for this - it is not an over the counter medication. ...Read more

What is a stronger topical antibiotic cream than those used in Neosporin for ulcerative wound care.

What is a stronger topical antibiotic cream than those used in Neosporin for ulcerative wound care.

Wrong question: NO antibiotic is useful for wound care. Neosporin is useless. Studies of surgical wounds comparing antibiotics to vaseline or Aquaphor showed no benefit from bacitracin or neosporin. Use of topical antibiotics caused allergic reactions, impaired wound healing, and promoted emergence of resistant bacteria such as MRSA. Care of a wound is determined by its location and size and cause. ...Read more

Does using hc 2.5 % cream thin the skin of hemorrhoids, allowing them to pop and get infected? Will neosporin help heal it if applied inside/around?

Does using hc 2.5 % cream thin the skin of hemorrhoids, allowing them to pop and get infected? Will neosporin help heal it if applied inside/around?

No: Topical steroids used long term can thin the skin around the anus but won't damage the hemorrhoid. Actually I never use these creams because they don't really do anything that time and avoidance of constipation with fiber doesn't do better. ...Read more

Neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) on acne - helps decrease scarring?

Can do better: No one needs to have bad acne or acne scarring in this day and age. I start folks on cheap topical Clindamycin which usually works; if that fails, cheap systemic tetracycline (kept mine under control for 25 years). A dermatologist can offer you even more potent retinoic acid-related meds, especially if it's cystic acne. You have a choice. ...Read more

After my toddler heals do I need to get all the neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) entirely off?

After my toddler heals do I need to get all the neosporin cream (neomycin and polymyxin b) entirely off?

Yes: I don't know what your toddler is healing from, but prolonged contact to the neomycin in the neosporin can lead to allergic reactions in the future. So, yes, removing any unneeded cream is a good idea as is using it sparingly to begin with. Plain vaseline or aquaphor will often help heal wounds as well as neosporin without any risk and is what I recommend to my patients post skin surgery. ...Read more

I accidentally applied neosporin instead of diaper rash cream on daughter's vagina will this hurt her?

Doubtful: Some kids can have an intolerance or allergic reaction to anything you put on their skin, especially in sensitive areas. Luckily that is rare in infants and to that medication. In the future if you want to do a trial for skin sensitivity, you can put a small amt on the pad of a bandaid, apply it to a clear skin site like the back & check it over the next day. No break out, no sensitivity ...Read more
