My baby is milk allergic, and she has acid reflux. What kind of formula would be good to use?

Check with doc first: If she truly has milk allergies, you may want to check with doc about using elemental formula such as nutramigen or alimentum etc...Soy is also an option, but I would check with her doc first. These may help with her reflux as well. If not, med such as Prevacid or Zantac (ranitidine) can be used for reflux etc. Thickening formular with rice cereal may help also. I have got a lot of acid reflux but one good thing food not getting stuck had for a couple weeks how long before it settles down bit of chest discomfo?

Suggest endoscopy: I am glad to hear that food is no longer getting stuck. This symptom is known as dysphagia. Given your age, I would still recommend an endoscopy (EGD) to ensure that you do not have a stricture or other long term injury to your esophagus. Barrett's esophagus and possibly esophageal cancer are concerns in your age group. GERD can often be chronic, and you may need lifelong medications as well. ...Read more

It: It sounds as though she may be suffering from gastro-esophageal reflux disease (gerd). The most common symptoms of gerd are:
- heartburn
- sore throat
- "lump in the throat" sensation or difficulty swallowing
- acidic or sour taste in your mouth
- dry cough
- hoarseness
- regurgitation (wet burps)

dairy products such as yogurt or milkshakes can give some relief - milk had antacid properties. It is important to discuss these symptoms with her doctor. There are many antacid and acid blocker medications that can help alleviate her symptoms. In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to help:
- avoid spicy, acidic, or fatty foods
- avoid alcohol and caffeine
- avoid tight clothing - especially tight belts and pants
- eat small meals
- do not eat for a few hours before going to bed.

Good luck! ...Read more

Acid reflux.: Most people with acid reflux require long-term medication, but if you're doing exceptionally well, it may be worth a trial of stopping it to see how you do. I would follow anti-reflux precautions well, and use antacids such as Tums (calcium carbonate) whenever you feel acid reflux. If your symptoms recur more than 3x per week, you probably need to be back on the medicine. I would discuss this with your G.I doc prior. ...Read more
