Concerning diets, ppl often suggest things like cutting off carbs and sugars and add lean proteins. Can you please suggest specific foods for diets?
Balanced diet: I like diets that focus on eating foods with a low glycemic index. Glycemic index is a measure of how much the foods impact your blood sugar. Low Glycemic diets have been associated with decreased risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, depression, and more. Try to fill up half your plate with green veggies, 1/4 of your plate with lean protein, and 1/4 of your plate with starch. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Good idea or unnecessary to have a modest amount of simple carbs (sugars) in the AM upon waking (due to having "fasted" for several hours (sleeping))?
Unnecessary, unwise: It's healthy for our bodies to go many hours fasting- healthy person can maintain stable blood sugars for much longer than people sleep. Sugars are toxic. Throughout human evolution sugars (other than those found in fruit) were not part of the diet (other than occ. honey). I know all processed food is not great for you. But how can you tell by looking at label which is OK or natural, salt or good sugar or carbs?
Healthy Diet!: Google 'food pyramid' and 'DASH' to learn about healthy diets. Generally, try to eat more proteins and less carbohydrates & fats while maintaining portion control and remaining physically active. Salad dressings can convert a healthy food into an item loaded with fat & salt, so always ask for the dressing on the side and dip your fork in it, rather than drowning the salad with it. ...Read more
What is a good carb intake to lose weight and keep blood sugar from dropping too low? This happened with a fad diet I tried. I am not a diabetic.
QUALITY NOT QUANTITY: The more complex carbs are better in this regard. White flour carbs are very quickly absorbed and can cause a sudden surge in Insulin levels, which will invariably drop you like a bad marriage within a few hours. More complex carbs will get absorbed slower, hence preventing or decreasing Insulin spikes. As a rule of thumb, never eat carbs by themselves, no more than 20-30 grams per meal. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
What is a good amount of calories, sugar, fiber, and carbs for granola? I like eating it as a snack for fiber.
Watch for sugar/fats: While granola has a reputation as a health food, most types are loaded with sugar and fat! look for granolas with the least sugar you can find- no more than 10 grams per 1/4 cup. Ideally less than 100 calories & at least 3 gr. Of fiber per 1/4 cup is best. Avoid those with high fructose corn syrup or agave nectar! try making your own: http://foodtrainers.Blogspot.Com/2011/02/oh-no-no-granola.Html. ...Read more
Ketonic diet for insulin resist 35f? allow for stable blood sugars, feeling better and weight loss? No carbs = no sugar spikes/crash & fat burn? Good?
15g simple carbs: Assuming you mean for a diabetic that can eat, 15 grams of simple carbs (things that taste sweet, made of real sugar) such as glucose tablets, juice, quick dissolving candy. Complex carbs that require digestion (bread, pasta) will take longer to raise blood sugar. Avoid snacks with fat, bc the fat will slow absorption too. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
