Is it possible that a child suddenly shows signs of allergies for the first time, at almost 5 years of age?

Is it possible that a child suddenly shows signs of allergies for the first time, at almost 5 years of age?

YES: Allergies happen when your bodies immune system become "sensitized" to something "x" and develop antibodies to it. Over time your child has multiple exposures to x (years 1-4) and became sensitized. We are rarely if ever allergic to anything when born; but develop them over time (and exposure). So it would be quite normal to "suddenly" become allergic at age 5 even if they had it many previous. ...Read more

Other symptoms?: Fever itself is never an evil "symptom." it is a sign of an infection that if fully vaccinated-may be a virus germ that will improve with"comfort" care and support. Numbers on a thermometer are not as important as associated symptoms/comfort and severity/duration. You may watch and wait for your toddler-offer meds if he tolerates/needs it. Follow up with your pediatrician if things worsen. ...Read more

My 41 year old daughter is in the hospital with a Hgb of 2.1. Her most prominent indication of this was very poor brain function...is this possible?

Extreme anemia: Wow! That's an extraordinarily low hemoglobin level; she may be lucky to be alive. Such extreme anemia certainly could cause altered mental function and other neurological symptoms, but so could the thing(s) that might cause the anemia, like blood loss, iron or folate (folic acid) deficiency, etc, etc. Discuss with her doctor(s). Good luck to her. ...Read more

Intermittent fever for a month. Comes at night, the highest it generally reached is 99.4. 97.7-98.7 is my normal range. CBC, thyroid, and mono neg. ?

Need more info: Technically, this is still not a fever. However if this happens every night and and is associated with night sweats,I would be more concerned about infections such as Tb or Lymphoma(particularly Hodgkins), or thyroid problems. ...Read more

My 6 yr old daughter has a fever of 101.5 and her respiration rate is 40. Is that within a normal range for fever? Thank you

My 6 yr old daughter has a fever of 101.5 and her respiration rate is 40. Is that within a normal range for fever? Thank you

High end: The average respiratory rate @ 6 would be expected to run 18-28 / min with a rise of 5/min for every degree of fever (f) .This would put a rate of 40 at the higher end of expected. If the process giving her a fever is located in her lungs, it could easily push it higher. I often get chest x-rays in kids more due to increased work of breathing than what i hear on exam. ...Read more

Is it normal for a vesicular rash to erupt 7-10 days at the site of varicella vaccination in a 15 month old? The overall size of the rash is 1cm.

Yes it can be: Varivax is a live virus vaccine. The incubation for natural chickenpox is 10-21 days. To have a little chickenpox rash at the site of the vaccine 7-10 days afterwards does happen in about 10% of cases. Some will develop mild chickenpox and break out all over the body. ...Read more

Is minor heart pain after the first workout in a few months normal in 18 year old adolescent or does is it a cause of medical concern?

Is minor heart pain after the first workout in a few months normal in 18 year old adolescent or does is it a cause of medical concern?

Not heart: 18 year olds don't get heart pain (okay, you can never say never); but unless that person is diabetic or using cocaine, it doesn't happen. More likely (much more likely!), the new workouts have made the chest muscles sore and that's the cause of symptoms. ...Read more

Is a peak flow of 300 a reason to be concerned in a 58 year old 5 ft 7, normal weight?

Is a peak flow of 300 a reason to be concerned in a 58 year old 5 ft 7, normal weight?

Normal is 370: You are just barely in the green assuming your normal peak flow is 370. A number of assumptions. You probably have some underlying disorder like asthma or COPD causing your peak flow to be lower? Green means that you are ok, yellow range would be from 300 to 185 and below 185 is the red range. Red range, seek medical attention. Yellow range - you should have a plan with your regular physician. ...Read more

Is it ok?

Talk to neuro: Eeg results are inscrutable. From the sounds of it, it doesn't sound very impressive, but truthfully, the neurologist will make better sense of this. Whether this is something to pay attention to, or just a normal sleepy variant, your neurologist will give you a definitive answer. ...Read more
