Is Cough Syrup Safe For A 6 Year Old
Maybe so, maybe not.
Depends on the child, why he/she is coughing and the cough syrup. There are many illnesses that cause cough. Best to see your doctor about any significant cough so that the cause is found and proper medicine can be given. For minor coughs honey in hot herb tea is soothing for children over 1 year of age. ...Read more
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Dextrometorphan: If anything works otc....It is the aforementioned active ingredient. Honey has also been proven to sooth the cough receptors, but don't have high expectations! Having said that, as pediatricians, we don't like cough supressants, unless the cough interferes with resting at night. As annoying as the cough is, it's there for a reason, it protects the lungs from all the phlegm that drains postnasally. ...Read more
My 6 year old daughter been sick coughing and we gave her cough medicine and she went to sleep and her nose started bleeding very worried?
Bloody noses: Bloody noses are very common in children, especially during times of illness. The mucus in the nasal/sinus passage ways can be irritating and the membranes in the inside of the nose are easily damaged, thus the source of the bloody nose. Petroleum jelly placed on the inside of each nostril 1-2x daily and frequent use of saline nasal mist to aide in thinning mucus secretions would be recommended. ...Read more
Is phenergan (promethazine) cough syrup safe for 1 month old baby, because she is giving us sleepless nites?
Codeine: I think the best cough syrup for a nine year old whose cough is a post nasal drip and interfering with sleep, both the nine year olds and his parents, is something like Robitussin with Codeine which is available as a generic and though it does not taste very good is usually very effective. I would start with a teaspoon of honey first for milder cases before the codeine. ...Read more
I consumed duro-tuss cough syrup & breastfed my 1 year old. Will it cause any health affecting damage to my baby? I didn't know & am worried.
My 3 year old daughter has a horrible cough and nausea. Can I give her cough syrup (children's nyquil) and gravol together?
No: The am academy of pediatrics doesn't recommend any cough products for young children as they haven't been shown effective and sometimes are harmful. Children's coughs may benefit from vaporizer, drinking fluids, and 1 tsp honey for those over 1 year. If cough persists, see dr: consider asthma, pneumonia, postnasal drainage cough, etc. I am not familiar with gravol, so no advice with it. ...Read more

My Baby is 1 year old. Is it safe to give him salbutamol for cough without consulting his pedia. That was his cough medicine before. Thanks?
Talk to pediatrician: Never administer any drug to a child without the expressed and learned opinion of your pediatrician. We don't know if the old bottle of cough medicine you have on-hand has expired, if its the right drug for your child's current condition, nor can we calculate appropriate weight-based dosing (I'm sure the child has grown since he was a baby). ...Read more
I took 5ml of hydrocodone cough syrup three hours ago is it safe for me to take a Benadryl pink pill?
Mostly.: There is likely some anti-histamine in the cough syrup. That and not the narcotic is probably the bigger risk. And that isn't a big risk. Furthermore, the peak effect of the hydrocodone was by 3 hrs and by now it is wearing off. But if there was anti-histamine in the cough syrup it is still there (but not at peak). These are safe with a wide range of safe doses. ...Read more

Perhaps: The cough suppressant in Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm is dextromethorfan. It is ralatively mild cough suppressant and ofter combined with an anti-histamine. I'm not sure what other cough medicine you want to use. Codeine often works better and is available by prescription. If the cough is persistant you probably should see your physician. ...Read more
We simply don't know: While I am inclined to say it is probably ok, we do not have enough information and no formal studies to say one way or another. Demonstrating safety or hazard is much more difficult than you may realize. That is why we always err on the side of caution during pregnancy and take things only when clearly indicated and of proven benefit. ...Read more

My 3yrs old son coughs in continuous volleys. Has been on cough syrup then antibiotics 5 days. Pls what do I do?
Child's Cough: Did he have his DPT vaccination? You don't want to miss pertussis. If you are in a dry climate, a humidifier may help. Does he have a feber? Is he active or sleepy? If active and no fever, that is a good sign. Since kids have small airways, coughs can persist for weeks, but if the right antibiotic was chosen and he is up and active, he should improve. If not, call the pediatrician. ...Read more

No...: First, only mom should be taking her prescription cough medicine. If you have a cough, you need to be evaluated by your doctor as you may not have the same diagnosis as your mom.
