I recently had the stomach flu and had blood in stool. Went to ER said it will go away. I still see spots of blood in stool. Its been 7 days. Normal?
Not normal: It is never normal to have blood in your stools. That said, it doesn't mean it has to be due to something serious as hemorrhoids are both common & a common cause of blood in stool. Blood in the stool should be evaluated. If bright red or maroon then a lower GI tract scope (colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, proctoscopy) is first step. If black bloody stool then upper scope indicated. See a GI doctor. ...Read more

Rapid heart rate (120 resting), nausea, bloody stool, migraines, mild fever following snowboarding and a few hard falls (one to head). 6 hours since??
The ER calls you: I believe your resting heartrate is way too high and may represent an incompensable bleed that could be occurring thorugh the GI system or into the peritoneum. The best thing to do for yourself aside from getting to the ER is tanking up with as much fluid (water, juice, milk) as possible right now. Get some samples of your stool from the toilet as well...if possible and take it in for testing. ...Read more

Is there any cure for swine flu?? Is it contagious?? What to do If someone caught it.?? How to prevent it?? What r d odds that one can die from it??
Which type?: This label has been associated with both the H1N1 of 2009 and 2013-14 and another strain, H1 N5 (I think) in 2013. The H1N1 was in the vaccine for 2013-15. Vaccination or total exclusion from community contact are the primary preventive measures. Use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) after exposure may also prevent it. We see deaths every year from flu, but the strain is often not studied. ...Read more

I am a female doc having a one year old kid. I have to take care of swine flu positive cases. What's the risk to my baby. Should I give tamiflu (oseltamivir) to him.
Get a flu shot: Your child should be immunized against the flu. If you child is one year old she should have two flu shots given one month apart. Barring that you should wash your hands with soap and water before handling your child. Recent recommendations have lowered the age for giving tamiflu, (oseltamivir) so it's an open question if you want to give it prophylactic ally. ...Read more
Varies: Infants under a year of age have no immunity to swine flu. They can be vaccinated and the vaccine works about 50-60 percent of the time after 2 doses. Most do well with illness eventually. They can get very ill, need hospitalization or even die from swine flu. They are in the high risk group for complications and would benefit from treatment with the anti-flu medicine tamiflu (oseltamivir). ...Read more
