Zyrtec and Benadryl (diphenhydramine): Hello. These two antihistamines taken together will probably cause sedation. As physicians, we often times double up on antihistamines in challenging cases but i usually use non-sedating antihistamines when I do this. There are other medications that may work better than this combination. Check with your doctor for other options. ...Read more
Probably not helpful: Both drugs need to be absorbed by the GI system before they take effect to stop itching and sneezing (can take up to 1 hr). Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can dry up mucus (and make you sleepy), which zyrtec will not do at any time. If you have taken zyrtec for several days without relief from itching or sneezing, you may have something besides allergies (e.g. A cold) or need a different treatment. See your doctor. ...Read more

Well, i took Benadryl (diphenhydramine) about 12 hours ago and i was wondering, may i take zyrtec?
Antihistamines: Yes you can, but you really should have some doctor guidance with your medications, because you did not mention what symptoms you are treating with the antihistamines and they may not be the ideal medication if you are not responding to one and need to add another. I took a zyrtec about 12 hrs ago and was wondering if it was ok to take one benadryl (diphenhydramine)?
it is not harmful to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) after Zyrtec- both medications are antihistamines and generally you would not need to take both of them
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a stronger antihistamine and may help with symptoms unresolved by Zyrtec - it often has more sedation as side effect than Zyrtec ...Read more
Not a good choice: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a short acting antihistamine. Zyrtec is a long acting antihistamine. You may overdose if taking both at the same time or taking both in the same day. Consider a better allergy medication if zyrtec is not working well or if you have been taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine) longer than 5 days. ...Read more
Yes, but...: That's a lot of medicine for an 8 month old. Make sure it has been ok'd by your pediatrician, and this is not a good long term combination. If that little one has that severe of allergies, might consider adding a med like singulair (montelukast) to get allergies under control. Also, try to reduce exposure to the allergens rather than adding more medicine. ...Read more

Antihistamines + ?: Bendrly (diphenhydramine) and zyrtec (cetirizine) are both antihistamines and only serve to block histamine. During an allergic reactions, there are many other chemical mediators of inflammation that trigger symptoms. An allergist can assist in finding the right combination of medications for relief. When it comes to antihistamines, more is not necessarily better. ...Read more

Can you give a 15-year-old Zyrtec and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) D at the same time... He weighs hundred pounds?
No: Zyrtec and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are both antihistamines which should not be given simultaneously because the total dose will be too high. You can add a decongestant that does not contain any antihistamine. With allergies that are so severe that one antihistamine is not adequate, the next step is to add a nasal steroid spray. This can be prescribed by your MD. Good allergan avoidance is also important. ...Read more
