Can you take Benadryl allergy with Mucinex Cold, Flu, & Sore Throat? Think I have a sinus infection.

How many Benadryl (diphenhydramine) allergy pills do I take?

How many Benadryl (diphenhydramine) allergy pills do I take?

Perhaps, one: See prior answer for details about benadryl (diphenhydramine). An over the counter dose is 25 mg (the same dose they put in many 'sleep aides' like tylenol-pm, where the side effect of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) of drowsiness is the main ingredient). If taking it for typical allergies (runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing), could try one tablet. But there are better ones today with less side effects (zyrtec, allegra, claritin, etc). ...Read more

How long does Benadryl (diphenhydramine) allergy med stay in your system?

7-18 hr, effectively: That's with a normal dose. The half-life (time it takes 1/2 the med to leave your body) is 3.4 to 9.2 hrs. Double that time and 75% of it has left your system at which point it's generally not helping anymore. Triple it and 87.5% is gone, etc.
If you take twice the normal dose you could still have a significant amount after more than 24 hours. ...Read more

Is it ok to give a small amount of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to a 2 month old with allergies?

Is it ok to give a small amount of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to a 2 month old with allergies?

Why assume allergy: Babies are not little big people. Their immune system that triggers allergic responses is crude & mostly inactive until older. Some do have food allergies based on long pregnancy exposures, but airborne issues are unlikely until older. Babies do struggle with dust/perfume/fragrances, smoke & respond best to a nasal wash out with saline. Antihistamines thicken mucous & increase their nasal blockage. ...Read more

Why can't I take benadryl (diphenhydramine) 3 days before an allergy test? Is there another option?

Why can't I take benadryl (diphenhydramine) 3 days before an allergy test? Is there another option?

No Antihistamines: Antihistamines (like benadryl, (diphenhydramine) claritin, zyrtec, allegra) interfere with the skin testing performed in clinic to determine what you are allergic to. Your test will not work if you take these close to testing. If nasal allergies are the problem, you can try an over the counter nasal steroid but remember that this take a few days to start improving symptoms. ...Read more

I was wondering if I could take nyquil for my cold and benadryl (diphenhydramine) for my allergies?

Please help! After 3 benadryls (diphenhydramine) and 2 zyrtec, still no relief from allergies. Please help?

Antihistamines +?: Bendrly (diphenhydramine) and zyrtec (cetirizine) are both antihistamines and only serve to block histamine. During an allergic reactions, there are many other chemical mediators of inflammation that trigger symptoms. An allergist can assist in finding the right combination of medications for relief. When it comes to antihistamines, more is not necessarily better. ...Read more

I have been taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for allergies. It makes me tired. Will this go away with time?

Usually not: The sedating effect of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may get a little better with time, but will not likely totally go away. There are many non-sedating antihistamines and allergy medications out there, so I suggest talking to your local pharmacist or your primary care doctor about over the counter or prescription alternatives. ...Read more

I seem to have developed an allergy to our new dogs. Tried several antihistamines but Benadryl (diphenhydramine) works best. Can I take on a regular basis?

Allergy: Remember the best treatment is avoidance and we have the same problem. I'd sacrifice to be with my dogs too, hehehe. If you can tolerate Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and it's the only thing that works, you can take it regularly, but remember, it can make you sleepy. I took one 25mg Benadryl (diphenhydramine) allergy on monday it's now friday and I still feel out of it is this normal or did I overdose? I'm 19, 98 pounds 5'4

You did not: Overdose. I doubt it's from the med you took on Monday. I feel it is more due to the allergies that you took the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to treat. Talk to your doctor about other options to treat allergies. Most are less sedating. ...Read more

My allergies are currently very bad. What do you suggest for relief? I took a Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at 10 am eastern time this morning. Can I take something now?

Depends: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be used minimally every 4 hrs at the correct dose (50mg for adults). Pseudoephedrine (sudafed) can help with stuffy congested noses-obtained behind the counter without a prescription from the pharmacy- or better yet, purchase combination longer acting claritin/zyrtec/allegra - d. Consider nose sprays prescribed by your doctor for allergies. ...Read more

It is safe to use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for my perfume esence allergy? At my highschool, almost everyone uses a perfume and it will be very hard for me. I am 16.

Try other options: Perfumes cause local irritation in the nose and eyes, which leads to symptoms very similar to allergies. But what you are experiencing is not a true allergic reaction. So Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may not be very helpful, and can make you sleepy. Try over the counter Zyrtec or Allegra and if still not better, then you will need to go see a doctor for prescription nose sprays. ...Read more

Have you ever heard of anyone w/true allergy to benadryl (diphenhydramine)? Would this allergy be likely to turn serious? How can someone be allergic to antihistamines?

Yes: Good question. It is very rare but does happen. Sometimes they are not allergic to the Diphenhydramine but the dyes and fillers used to make the medicine. But people have also had reactions to dye free benadryl (diphenhydramine). You can develop an allergy to anything. I have seen people with Benadryl (diphenhydramine) allergy who could take other antihistamines such as hydroxyzine. ...Read more

OTC allergy meds: Yes, there are. The old standouts are loratidine (claritin) and Cetirizine (zyrtec).
This year, fenofexamine (allegra) was introduced. All have been prescription medicines previously and touted as non-sedating. Cetirizine often causes drowsiness so it has to be taken at bedtime; the other 2 can be taken during the day.

What is an accurate description of the terms 'rebound effect' of. .... Say taking Benadryl (diphenhydramine) too much for allergies? Thanks.

No rebound with that: Rebound describes the effect of symptoms that become worse after treatment with a medication. The best example is the over the counter decongestant nasal sprays such as oxymetazoline (afrin). This really helps decrease nasal congestion rapidly, but if used too many days in a row, when the person stops using it, the nasal congestion comes back even worse. There shouldn't be rebound with benadryl (diphenhydramine). ...Read more
