Is Amitriptyline As Good As Neurontin For Nerve Pain
The brain and spinal cord communicates with what is occurring in the internal organs and limbs by nerve fibers where are like electrical wires with insulation (myelin) and the "copper" (axon). Within brain and spinal cord these nerves connect to other nerves via synapses on both axons and dendrites. A nerve can carry information regarding sensations, and ...Read more
Neuropathy: They are different. Often they can used in combination. I tend to reserve Amitriptyline for use at night for patients who are also having trouble with insomnia. Gabapentin must be titrated to minimize side effects. The most common problem i see is practitioners titrating to a high enough dose to get a reduction in pain. ...Read more
Can drugs for nerve pain like amitriptyline be so good that discontinuation of painkillers is possible?
Pain and adjuvants: In the treatment of pain, we use many medicines from vitamins, medical foods, nutraceuticals, and pharmacologics. Often but not always, opioids are necessary, but patient desires and cooperation do help,on choosing correct treatment approaches. Yes, but...: Zoloft, tramadol and amitriptyline all increase serotonin levels. Amitriptyline also potentiates this effect of Zoloft. BTW, Zoloft decreases the effect of tramadol by affecting hepatic metabolism. Gabapentin has no drug interactions at all. Adding amitriptyline at LOW doses may help, with CLOSE monitoring. Read up on serotonin syndrome. It's rare and usu. not life-threatening but be aware of it. ...Read more

Not aware of any simple means of reversing the sensation of sleepiness. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
I am considering taking Neurontin for nerve pain.Does this medication have a history of causing weight gain. I read that it did.
Gabapentin, yes: Possible weight gain. Unfortunately, doctors often do not address this when prescribing medicine, despite weight gain being very troubling for the many patients. Gabapentin differs from most other anticonvulsants, because it has minimal drug interaction potential and is not metabolized in humans. It is used for both paroxysmal and continuous neuropathic pain (nerve pain) conditions. ...Read more
Non-medical evidence: Recent studies of chronic pain management suggest that a combination of psychological, pharmacological and physical therapies, tailored to the needs of the individual patient, may be the best approach to mange neuropathic pain. Pharmacological choices are: amitriptyline, duloxetine, Neurontin or Lyrica as initial treatment for neuropathic pain, but not B12. ...Read more
