I'm on a homely diet since April : Low fat, Medium Carb & veg protein. Low on Ani protein, no red meat, No fast food, greasy/fried food. High Veg, Fruits. Brisk walking. I lost 13 lbs in this tenure. Is this normal loss or I am seriously ill inside?
No and no: generally this is for weight loss. The diet works either by making people so miserable that they don't eat, or loss of some muscle glycogen, or changing the cues for eating. All of these will be messed up by even small amounts of bread. Furthermore, the whole question implies trying to get out of eating less and exercising more and how to bail out on dieting. ...Read more
What is the best fruit to eat on a low carb diet can you eat crackers with unsalted top on a low carb low colostrol diet ?
Crackers are: carbs and its best to avoid them. Ezekiel bread is made from sprouted grains and is a good substitute for carbs. It's in the frozen food section at the market and comes in a variety of types. A bit expensive but dense so it goes a longer way than regular bread. Best fruit is what is low on the glycemic index. Search for a chart on the net. Berries are best. Peace and good health. ...Read more
Nutrition #: I have heard it said that regular supermarket white bread when eaten turns itself into a high amount of sugar. Is this true?
Why does the media say eating "gluten free" can reduce glycemic spikes as gf still allows rice and buckwheat which is high carb?
The Media is Wrong: Good observation. "glycemic spikes" are due to carbohydrates not gluten. Gluten is found in wheat and many people who go "gluten-free" subsequently reduce their carb intake. Changes in glucose control attributed to lack of gluten are actually due to carb reduction. For people who have celiac disease, going gluten free is important. There is little evidence that it helps others. ...Read more
Should I be on the low Carb/Paleo diet? Is it healthy? I won't be totally avoiding starchy veg, just restricting intake.
I'm not sure, but should people trying to eat a low carb/low sugar diet eat white instead of whole wheat?
No: No bread of any kind is preferable but whole grain is much better than refined flour white bread. ...Read more
It depends: Whichever one has the least amount of carbs is probably best; if you choose bread then choose whole grain bread. Consider whole grain crackers that also have seeds as those will be lower in carbs (such as mary's gone crackers). In following a low carb diet you don't need to completely avoid grains but keep the amount of grains relatively low; whole gluten-free grains are relatively healthy. ...Read more
I want to eat foods with a low glycemic index because my blood sugar is a little high. Is 7 high?
II eat no more 20 carbs a day. My blood sugars have been in the 50's, 60's & 70's. Can low potassium cause low blood sugar readings or my carb intake?
It's lack of carbs: Why limit your carbs to 20g daily? Why are you checking your blood sugars? As you ought to know if you are doing this experiment, your body will eventually deplete its natural stores of glucose and eventually have impaired gluconeogenesis, leading to ketosis, a state that some seek for extreme weight loss, as fat is mobilized to provide alternative ketone-related energy. Be careful! Good luck ...Read more
Do hight fat foods like hummus and nuts really lower ldl? Or is it replacing a stick of butter w same amount hummus lowers chol? Bad but not as bad?
Peanuts: Unsalted peanuts should be low in salt and low in carbohydrates. Nuts, in general, are a good source of protein and fats. Nuts contain monounsaturated fat, vitamin E, folic acid, magnesium, copper, protein, and fiber, and are rich in antioxidant phytochemicals. Nuts lower "bad" cholesterol levels and raise "good" cholesterol levels. Key is portion control. Don't go nuts on your nuts! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Assuming the food i eat is high in total fat but very low in saturated fat & i manage to burn all calories i eat.Is high fat food OK in this scenario?
Unknown: I don't think we really know the answer to this excellent question but my impression is that, if you're using all the calories you eat, the fat content is not harmful. I base this on lipid profile results of Dr. Adkins (of the Adkins' diet) who eat a low carb, high fat diet, lose weight, and have no demonstrable harm. Some fats (monounsaturated) in moderation, appear to actually be beneficial. ...Read more
