Is bone age always the same for every bone?ie,if a wrist x-ray showed a delay in bone age of 2 years, would face /skull bones also be delayed 2 years?

Is bone age always the same for every bone?ie,if a wrist x-ray showed a delay in bone age of 2 years, would face /skull bones also be delayed 2 years?

Not necessarily, but: B"sd thats a very insightful question. Generaly, endocrinologist accept that the bone age determined from 1 hand /wrist x ray applies to the whole body. Although, not necesarrily true, bone age os determined is clinicaly useful to identify growth delay and can be used to indicate further evaluation and to follow changes over time. So the test seems to serve its purpose. Always glad to discuss. ...Read more

Fused Skull Bones (Definition)

The cranium or brain part of the skull is comprised of 8 different bones, and although these joints don't move like those in the extremities, there is slight movement which allows an infant's skull slight movement to enable birth and growth occurs at the margins to allow head symmetry. The margins or sutures generally fuse by 22-39 months. At times they can be prematurely ...Read more

Is bone age related to the growth plates? At bone age 16, is growth possible? How much (with genectis not being a problem)?

Depends: At a bone age of 16 most males are finishing their growth with the growth centers fusing (closing) at a bone age of 18. The anticipated increase in length between 16-18 is about 2 inches. ...Read more

Peds endocrinologist: This is really specialized care that you want to see a pediatric endocrinologist. She is right at the borderline of being appropriate for growth hormone treatment. Growth hormone treatment is very expensive. But using it now might be able to have her gain a couple more inches in height. ...Read more

Is it true that the vertebrate growth plates close a year or two later than the growth plates in the wrists and in the knees?

Is it true that the vertebrate growth plates close a year or two later than the growth plates in the wrists and in the knees?

Not really: Once the growth plates in your hand and knees close you are done growing so if you are hoping that your spine will continue to grow for another year or two it is very unlikely ...Read more

Growth in the spine: in the vertebral bodies or vertebrae still occur even after the hands and feet and limbs have closed growth plates and it often does. there are 24 pre sacral vertebrae, of each one adds only 1mm then that is an inch. Growth occurs in the spine until about age 20, but slows compared to the rates shown in adolescence ...Read more

Would Pagets make long bones grow longer? Would it cause a 40 yearold adult to grow several inches taller in height? No bowed limbs or spine curvature

Would Pagets make long bones grow longer? Would it cause a 40 yearold adult to grow several inches taller in height? No bowed limbs or spine curvature

No: No, the growth plates in a 40 year old have been closed have been closed for many years and so pagers or really any condition can not really cause the growth of a person several inches at that age. Hat size can get bigger as the skull can enlarge, but no significant vertical growth. ...Read more

Yes: The major mechanical determinant of height is how long the longest bones in the body, like the femur (thigh) and tibia (leg), become. At the ends of these bones are the growth plates that appear like open spaces on x-rays when growth is ongoing but close when growth is completed. If the growth plate on your son is still open, there is potential for further growth. ...Read more

There is difference between male and female bone structures.I although being a male have female bone structure after age 15.Can it be reversed.Please.

Confused: For similar size & proportion male v female comparison, male tends to have more bone density/mass, pelvis is shaped differently, they tend to be taller so proportions may vary some--but not substantial differences in the most people, which is a good thing, since no, cannot be changed as chromosomally derived. Have faith you are shaped how you were designed to be and god does not make mistakes. ...Read more

My son is15, bone age 17.Some of his growth plates are not completely closed(rad/cub,little space at distal femur. Is it still possible to treat him?

Growth plates: Your son is 15 yrs and his bone age is 17 yrs, he is close to his maximum height. For short stature treatment he is beyond a growth stage to make much of a difference. Growth hormone at this stage would close those open growth plates faster. I am assuming that this is the treatment you are asking about. ...Read more

Platform shoes: If you entered puberty the same time as your friends & your bone maturity is that of a >19 yo there is little you can do to increase your height.A single x-ray of your left hand can be assessed for bone maturity. If >19, you are done growing, if bony maturity is more like 15 you might grow an additional couple of inches. There are no magic solutions if your growth centers r closed. ...Read more
