Is Age A Factor In Fused Skull Bones
None.: As a newborn, none of the skull bones are fused; there are membranes/cartilage that fill spaces between them. Gradually this converts to bone (ossification), mostly during childhood, but process may not be complete till age 25! if they fuse prematurely, will cause intracranial pressure, head pain, visual problems, and unusual head shapes causing low self-esteem. Craniosynostosis requires surgery. ...Read more
Bone is a living growing tissue made mostly of collagen (protein that provides soft framework) & the mineral calcium phosphate that adds strength & hardens the framework. Two types of bone are found in the body; cortical (dense compact outer layer) & trabecular (makes up inner layer, ...Read more
Craniosynostosis: The skull is made of many bone plates which are not fully fused at birth, allowing for adequate brain development. Fibrous tissue between the plates (cranial sutures) calcifies as brain growth slows during the first five or so years. Premature fusion of the plates can cause a mis-sharpen head or inhibit brain growth. Not all fused sutures are worrisome. The only treatment, if required, is surgery. ...Read more
I have delayed bone age does that mean my skull will increase in circumference once my bones have reached adult age?
Unlikely : Most will reach their adult skull volume by age 10, with minor remodeling thereafter. The sutures don't fuse between the skull plates until much later. After 10 your growth ins primarily in your long bones ( legs, arms) which in most males stops at 16-18. If you have some delay (bone age of 15) that would not be enough to make more head growth likely. ...Read more
Is bone age always the same for every bone?ie,if a wrist x-ray showed a delay in bone age of 2 years, would face /skull bones also be delayed 2 years?
Not necessarily, but: B"sd thats a very insightful question. Generaly, endocrinologist accept that the bone age determined from 1 hand /wrist x ray applies to the whole body. Although, not necesarrily true, bone age os determined is clinicaly useful to identify growth delay and can be used to indicate further evaluation and to follow changes over time. So the test seems to serve its purpose. Always glad to discuss. ...Read more
