Daughter has high fever & stomach pain, probably a virus. When fever is down from tylenol/advil, she keeps shaking uncontrollably. What can be reason?

Virus in the blood.: Once a virus gets into cells, it begins to hyjack it to become a virus-making factory. Once there is enough virus, the infected cell will either shed the virus or else, burst open, leaving millions of virus particles in the blood stream. This sults in the sensation of feeling cold and triggering rigors. When immunity kicks in, they are responsible for the fever and sweats seen with viral inf. ...Read more

Is it okay to stagger doses of tylenol/advil for feverish child (5 yrs old)?

Is it okay to stagger doses of tylenol/advil for feverish child (5 yrs old)?

Why ever???: Fever is a normal body response that increases metabolism, heart rate & breathing to fight infection. It is a sign not the problem. I find it abusive to wake a child for fever meds or constantly be giving something in the false hope that it does something good. Kids need ample fluids, nutrition & rest to recover from an illness. If I choose to medicate I pick the longer acting drug & stick with it ...Read more

My niece have a fever of 105 what can we do to have the fever down? We are giving her baby tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen for baby?

Comfort meds: Temperature at or in excess of 105 deserves an evaluation by a physician within the next several hours. A cold compress on the forehead and plenty of oral fluids should be offered. The assessment should find a treatable issue or a virus.Keeping up with fluids is more important than the fever. Doctor can evaluate: If a parent is not sure when to take a 1 year old to the doctor, she can call the doctor's office. Some doctor's have their patients come in on the first couple of sick days, but it depends on the experience of the parents and on what the child is doing. "Very sleepy", "very fussy", or otherwise acting strangely, especially when the temperature is not very high, means the child can be evaluated. ...Read more

4 year old has fever 39.3 we have given him ibuprofen 3 hours ago he threw up. Can we give tylenol (acetaminophen) now what else can we do

Fevers: Fevers for the most part aren't dangerous and are just the body's natural reaction to fighting off an infection. Most of these infections are viral and may be accompanied by runny nose, sore throat, congestion, mild rash, or nothing at all. Since fevers aren't dangerous, we usually treat the fever with Acetaminophen (tylenol) or Ibuprofen just to make the child more comfortable as their body fights the illness. Acetaminophen can be given every 4 hours and Ibuprofen can be given every 6 hours. You can overlap them safely meaning that if you give Ibuprofen and 3 hours later the fever returns, you can give Acetaminophen to help until it is time to give the Ibuprofen again. You should not do this for more than a day without contacting your child's doctor, though since a persistent fever can be a sign of more serious illness.

"red flags" that we look for with fever to indicate something more serious is going on are:
-fevers that last 5 days or more
-fevers persistently above 104f orally
-a child that acts very sick - very irritable or difficult to wake
-difficulty breathing
-vomiting, diarrhea, refusal to drink, or dehydration
-a purple rash, esp on the legs
-stiff neck
-any complaints of pain such as the ear, throat, stomach or a joint

as always, use your judgement. If you think that your child is ill, err on the side of caution and call your child's doctor. ...Read more

I want to know what to do if my daughter has developed a viral type fever with barking dog cough? Fever goes down with a Tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen

Sounds like croup: Continue fever control. Keep her room cool and not too dry to help with her breathing. If she is having difficulty breathing, she may need a visit to the ER for a breathing treatment with racemic epinephrine and an oral dose of dexamethasone. This sounds like croup. All the best. ...Read more

Hi, Luca is on fever today and complaining about his stomach hurting... We have him some ibuprofen but he vomited. It is been around 3 hours since the ibuprofen and his fever continue high. Is it ok to do Tylenol now?

Fever in a child: Yes at this point its ok to give him tylenol. Is he taking fluids?? - sometimes a fever will break after fluids are given - not a large quantity - as he may vomit but something like a water ice or even sucking on an ice cube. But to answer your question - yes its safe. ...Read more

My 3 1/2 yr old has fever since last 48 yrs and gas developed a harsh productive cough. What should I give other than Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen?

See pediatrician: I'd recommend that you have your child seen by the pediatrician today to ensure that no further medication is necessary. Without knowing your child's history (ie wheezing?) I wouldn't recommend any cough suppressants (in addition to the young age - they really are not recommended). You may find relief with a teaspoon of honey (has been clinically proven to be as effective as the medications!) ...Read more

10month baby has fever range from 100 to 102.5.also Saw doctor prescribed ibuprofen & Tylenol (acetaminophen).can I use ice pack to reduce hot in his head, bathe him?

Yes but: fever isn't a bad thing. It is part of the body's way of fighting infection. It is good to treat the fever, because having a fever feels awful, but the fever won't "cook his brain" or anything bad like that. Alternate tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen as your doctor suggests, and if his symptoms worsen or don't improve, see your doctor again. Hope this helps! ...Read more

2yo with flu high fever puking chills sore throat cough runny nose he keeps spitting like his mouth taste bad! What to give besides tylenol (acetaminophen) ibuprofen?

Clear fluids: Give small amounts of pedialyte of chicken broth sweetened with a small amount of sugar to prevent dehydration. If you start with 1/2 tsp every 10-15 minutes you can often give enough fluids to prevent or treat dehydration. Increase amount of 1/2 tsp every hour or so as tolerated. Your child sounds like one the pediatrician should see. May want to do a rapid strep screen & assess for dehydration. ...Read more

Not good: Because it is never a good idea to accept the details from a person in such distress, I'd urge that you err on the conservative side and get her to a medical facility (ER) ASAP. The risk of damage even if not lethal is high - so go. That way, things can begin to be treated and her future will be better. It's not your responsibility, but if she trusts you - it may really help. Best wishes. ...Read more

Is Tylenol better than Advil for headache?

A: A number of things should be noted from your questions. First - it is generally not a good practice to take medication, whether "over-the-counter" or prescription, from someone else. Even well intentioned friends may not know important details of your medical history that may make it unwise or dangerous to use certain medications. Second - "tylenol" is a brand name for acetaminophen, and "advil" is a brand name for ibuprofen. Although both of these medications can be used for fever or pain reduction, they are different types of medication. Whether either of them is safe or correct for you to use could only be determined based on your medical background: important facts would include medications you may take for chronic conditions, and any history of allergies or intolerance of other medications. Third - there are many online "pill identifier" websites now; but the medication you are referring to may not be referenced since it is an over-the-counter product. Better to consult with your physician about what medications are right for you, and take only medication that you can verify by it's source bottle or package. ...Read more
