Is Accutane Safe For Acne
In selected patients: Accutane works for certain types of treatment resistant acne. However, it has significant side effects that limit its use. It causes serious birth defects so is not safe during pregnancy. It may causes problems with the skin, liver, muscles and vision. While not proven, it has also been linked to depression/suicidal thinking. You need a doc experienced with its use before starting accutane. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My son just started taking Accutane for acne. Is it safe? Will it work? Tried other things nothing worked.
This : This response is coming from a psychiatrist. Why is a psychiatrist answering your question? Because you asked about the safety of Accutane and there can sometimes be psychiatric side effects. I will leave it to one of the dermatologists to address the non-behavioral health aspects of this medication. I normally don’t recommend that any of my patients who have suffered from a major depression, take accutane. If a patient with a history of depression takes Accutane they should be monitored for any worsening of symptoms. There have been some incidences of depression, suicide thoughts and attempts, aggression, mood swings, personality changes, paranoia and loss of touch of reality while on accutane. There have also been some completed suicides on accutane. For this reason, the dermatologist will usually inquire at each visit if you son has any possible symptoms of depression to include: feeling sad or angry, feeling powerless or hopeless, withdrawing from friends, problems with sleep or appetite or suicidal thoughts. What medication is the best choice is made individually with the patient, the parent and the doctor. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Hey doctor! is it safe to take Accutane for the pcos patient for acne?
Moreover i've read that for hormonal acne its a temporary sol. , is that so?
Tough question: I think that there are situations where Isotretinoin can be used safely and effectively in patients with pcos, but it should be done under the guidance of someone very familiar with using the medication as there are a host of possible side effects. And i agree that the hormonal component tends to be the overwhelming issue for pcos-related acne, so it may not be as effective as in other types. ...Read more
For acne I tried tretinoin, oral/topical antibiotics, & birth control & still get a lot of acne. Low dose accutane a great final choice? Is it safe?
Well: However, it is unpleasant, and you must be sure not to become pregnant. Your skin will be dry, irritated, and may itch or burn. For severe acne, this is part of the informed consent you will give. After your course of treatment, you should be clear for at least several months. Most folks think it is worth it. Good luck. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Other options: Accutane is the most effective rx for severe acne, but your personal physician may have other ideas for you. The oral contraceptive pill may completely clear a woman who can take it. A regimen of tetracycline 500 2x/day plus topical benzoyl peroxide may clear fairly severe acne. If you have cystic acne, don't waste time / get scarred, accept the Accutane option. ...Read more
Probably: If you can be positive you are not and will not become pregnant while on it, and you truly need it, it is very worthwhile. If somebody's superstitions about acne being "normal" or due to your bad lifestyle or hygiene, you have my sympathy. The drug is pricey but a drug company if asked nicely sometimes makes its product available to the needy. Please get with your physician. ...Read more
Isotretinoin: Isotretinoin. For deep cysts, antibiotics may not be enough. Isotretinoin (amnesteem, claravis, sotret) is a powerful medication available for scarring cystic acne or acne that doesn't respond to other treatments. Better options: It's unwise to self-medicate with isotretinoin / accutane. There are precautions, even if pregnancy is not a possibility, and it's unpleasant. I see you're a male. Topical benzoyl peroxide as tolerated will probably be less unpleasant overall and if this does not clear you, adding a short course of a systemic antibiotic such as tetracycline probably will. Manage it till it self-cures with age. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
