Is Accutane A Good Drug To Fight Stubborn Acne
Accutane & Acne: Accutane (isotretinoin) is far and away the best medication for stubborn acne. Many cautions when taking it, though. If you are female, you have to have monthly pregnancy tests to make sure you are not pregnant while you are taking it. If you are a male, it's much easier to get. The high price of the drug puts many people off. A dermatologist can explain it all to you if you are a good candidate. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Any good drug store (walgreens preferably), acne scar creams or gels that you recommend? Nothing too expensive. I'm on Accutane as well
Wait: You should generally finish your Accutane treatment before you try to treat the acne scars. Acne scars are very hard to get rid of. There are over the counter products that can help slightly with dark spots, but I would not expect a major improvement. Indented scars will not respond to anything sold over the counter. ...Read moreSee 4 more doctor answers

Big guns: If "moderate" means acne that hasn't responded to topical benzoyl peroxide plus either a systemic antibiotic or topical spironolactone or the oral contraceptive pill if you're a "she", then consider trying it if it's offered to you -- it's not for the faint-hearted. There's no curing acne until it self-cures, but it can be managed. Best wishes. ...Read more
Milk Thistle + : I checked into interactions between Accutane and milk thistle, and could find none. Do tell your dermatologist or whoever is prescribing the Accutane . . . But the milk thistle should not affect its usefulness for acne. Please be aware that in some people, Accutane may evoke serious depression. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I get a lot of acne and it always leaves scarring, do you reckon Accutane would be a good choice for me?
Severe acne on chin since 5 years ago. Been on minocycline 4 times. What is a good dose of accutane and for how much time?
Accutane: Accutane is a very powerful medication that needs to be given under the strict supervision of a doctor. Normally, you would need to see a dermatologist before getting accutane, and would get a penal of required bloodwork starting accutane. If you are female, you most likely will need to be on birth control pills and take monthly pregnancy tests. ...Read more
Tried everything for my acne. derm suggests accutane next. was told it is a very potent last resort drug. am i putting my health to great risk?
Requires monitoring: Accutane can cause birth defects to any fetus exposed during pregnancy and occasionally triggers liver injury. It's use is usually monitored closely, with regular blood tests to look for early signs of any toxic effect( so you stop it) and women are usually required to be on BC/sign a contract to that effect. It is a great drug when used appropriately but not one that is used without some caution. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
When i was 18 male (now 26) i took isotretinoin (accutane) for 6 mon until my acne was completely gone. Miracle drug. But any longterm side-effects?
Yes but only if . . : Only if you're willing to tolerate side effects and very strict requirements for taking it. Remember that Isotretinoin is associated w/birth defects. That's why you need to promise to use 2 forms of birth control regularly. If you can't, then it's not worth risk of delivering baby w/physical deformities. Discuss your options w/your dermatologist. Only you can decide if it's appropriate for u. ...Read more

Got prescribed Accutane for acne How dangerous is this for my body? Also I have plantar fasciitis. Will this prevent healing? should I avoid this drug
Accutane dangers: Accutane is a very potent teratogen. It can cause very serious birth defects. You must use at least 2 excellent forms of birth control when taking it and since it is stored in your body fat probably for a year after you have stopped taking it. It is usually prescribed only for severe cystic acne only. Do NOT take it for mild acne. Has nothing to do with plantar fasciitis. ...Read more
Stubborn, mild acne not responding to antibiotics or topical creams. Accutane seems too extreme for non-cystic acne. Help?!
Keep at it.: There are three main parts to approaching acne...1) reduce the amount of bacteria on skin.. 2) keep pores open...3) reduce oil production. Antibiotics can be topical and/or oral. Other surface treatments aim to reduce bacteria and/or keep pores open. Keep experimenting and working with your doctor until you find the right mix. It can take a few weeks to see improvement even with right mix. ...Read more
My son has severe painful cystic acne. He taking accutane. I heard that sometimes oral antibiotic is also added on some patients. Is this a good idea?
Probably: Since junior is on accutane, he's under a dermatologist's care and the decision should be made by him/her. Sometimes the rapid death of the bacteria from antibiotics in cystic acne can itself be troublesome. I'm very glad junior's getting effective treatment; thanks for making it possible. ...Read more
