Is a laminectomy or vertebrae fusion or both any good to relieve back pain?

Is a laminectomy or vertebrae fusion or both any good to relieve back pain?

Depends on the pain: Back pain can be caused by many sources: muscles, nerves, discs, joints etc. In the back. If your particular pain is caused by nerve compression as might be seen on an mri, a laminectomy procedure to remove the pressure can greatly relive pain. An epidural injection often helps predict how well a laminectomy might work. Fusion is preferred when there is instability or seve joint or disc problems. ...Read more

Had a laminectomy/discectomy more back pain after then fusion to fix it at l3, 4 now herniation at L5 should my dr just do a fusion now or a lam/discec?

Had a laminectomy/discectomy more back pain after then fusion to fix it at l3, 4 now herniation at L5 should my dr just do a fusion now or a lam/discec?

Depend on findings: I do not recommend prophylactic spinal arthrodesis. If you have a disc herniation at the l5-s1 level with associated radiculopathy associated with either the L5 or s1 nerve root that does not respond conservative care, then a decompressive laminotomy & dissecting may be indicated. If there is associated spinal instability with associated dominating lower back pain, an arthrodesis may be indicated. ...Read more

Low back pain. 8 mos post laminectomy. Need good lower back strengthening exercises. Pain dr. Claims says its bio mech changes in facets post surgery?

Possibly: There is nothing about a laminectomy that should precipitate facet pain/arthritis. But patietns with spinal stenosis who require laminectomy often have multiple back issues including facet arthritis. There could be scarring after surgery causing some pain but typically you would have some leg pain as well. After completing pt and core exercises, facet pain can easily be tested with an injeciton. ...Read more

Laminectomy 4 mo ago. Have low back pain near incision / some leg pain. Epi injection didn't help. Cycling/running hurts it. Also tried resting. Mri?

Laminectomy Recovery: The pain sounds incisional or from the muscles around your operation. At four months postop, you need to give it more time. Try lower impact exercises such as elliptical trainers or swimming. This type of aerobic training has less impact on the healing muscles. Physical therapy may also help instructing proper technique to prevent aggravation. Good luck on recovery. ...Read more

Lower back pain. I didn't have before laminectomy 9 mos ago. Surgeon says MRI looks fine (no fractures, instability). Thinks its muscular. Possible?

Likely: After surgery, the muscles of the back weaken (much more if the surgery was extensive and muscles were cut to get to the spine). Starting pt as soon as the surgeon says it is safe will most likely improve the pain. Therapy should concentrate on back and core strengthening. ...Read more
