There are other inflammatory possibilities as well including gout, synovitis, bursitis, etc. The bottom line is that you really need to have this evaluated and examined by your local physician (primary care or orthopedist) likely with an xray and possibly an mri. If it is only an inflammatory issue (such as an arthritic flare), non-steroidal antiinflammatory medications can be taken (with caution and if not allergic). If this is unsuccessful along with other options including the ice and brace that you have tried, sometimes injections of either cortisone or hyaluronic acid can be considered.
