Is 500 mg of amoxicillin 4 x day for 7 days enough to clear a dental abscess?

Is 500 mg of amoxicillin 4 x day for 7 days enough to clear a dental abscess?

Maybe: Adequate duration of therapy has not been clearly determined for most infections, and we often make guesstimates. I would imagine that if the abscess was drained, no underlying tissues like bone were involved, that this regimen would be adequate. ...Read more

Dental abscess. Tooth surgically extracted. Given amoxycillin 250 mg n metronidazole 200mg q.i.d 4/7. Shouldn't 1 course be more than 4 days?

Can't generalize: While antibiotic courses are often longer when used solely to treat infections, in this case a big part of treating your infection was the removal of the offending tooth. Sometimes shorter courses of meds are used to help get the healing started then we rely on your immune system and the healing process. Ask your doctor this question to understand why a short course was prescribed. ...Read more

Dental abscess. Completed amoxycillin n metronidezole. For residue infection, better to take another course of amoxycillin or metronidezole?

Treatment?: What is the treatment for the tooth in question? Is it a periodontally involved tooth that is hopeless, or is it a tooth that requires root canal therapy, or a tooth that needs RCT retreatment? The cause of the abscess needs to be addressed. Your dentist should resolve the cause of the problem and chances are you will have no further infection. If you do, however, let your dentist decide. ...Read more

Have a periodontal tooth abscess. Can I take amoxicillin and bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) together to clear the infection until I can have the tooth extracted?

Antibiotics: I strongly recommend that you see a dentist first, have the tooth examined, determine the proper course of treatment, and then take the correct antibiotics. Certain infections require immediate intervention, not just pills. You'll heal faster and be better off in the long run. ...Read more

Get it seen soon: Having taken the same antibiotic before, the bacteria may have grown resistant to it. Additionally, not only will the pain of pus under pressure be unbearable, you run the risk of getting a blood infection, bone infection or most seriously, a Central Nervous System infection. Get it seen over the next few days if not, today. ...Read more

How long does a tooth abscess last? I have a hole in tooth so it's draining, and i take 500mg of amoxicillin twice a day. Just started taking the antibiotics last night. When should the swelling in my gums/face go down?

How long does a tooth abscess last? I have a hole in tooth so it's draining, and i take 500mg of amoxicillin twice a day. Just started taking the antibiotics last night. When should the swelling in my gums/face go down?

Maybe never, but...: Tooth abscesses originate from dead/diseased tissue within the bad tooth, which leads to an infection in the surrounding supporting bone (abscess). Antibiotics may temporarily reduce the abscess (usually takes no less than 48 hrs, but maybe longer), but never truly address the cause. For this you need a root canal or extraction. Some infections will not respond to antibiotics at all. ...Read more

Can you take amoxicillin for tooth abscess?

Not always 1st choic: Amoxicillin is not always the first choice for a tooth abscess. Simple pen v-k is very effective & if it is a recurring abscess, Clindamycin is next best. All depends on the severity of the problem & of course if you are allergic to certain antibiotics. I wouldn't take it as a matter of fact, see your dentist & decide. ...Read more

See a dentist: You must treat the source of the infection, not only the symptoms. Therefore, you need to clean out the inside of the tooth to remove the bacteria which is the source of the infection. The antibiotics cannot reach the source of the infection. See a dentist for more information, recommendation and treatment. ...Read more
