Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more

I have a 3.5 cm. Starburst mass, in my lower right lobe of my lung, so what is next.?

Ask pulmonologist: A lung mass is always of concern. Sometimes it can be determined to be benign simply by comparing xrays or CT scans over time. Often it must be biopsied. If possible, this is done through a scope passed down the windpipe. Sometimes that won't reach and biopsy must be done through the chest wall, guided by CT scan. In special cases biopsy is done with a scope through the chest wall or surgically. ...Read more

Not usually: Pneumonia itself does not usually appear as a mass on an xray. However, those that have a mass in their lungs, can develop an infection on top of that so it can definitely appear that way. I have servercopd with fibrosis and alower left lung mass is this not good?

See an expert: If you have copd, and fibrosis and a lung mass, you have three very serious, and separate problems. "mass" implies something over 3 cm in size and is likely to be lung cancer, or at least should be evaluated until proven otherwise. COPD and fibrosis are both risk factors for lung cancer, and make treatment much more complicated as well. Find a local expert. ...Read more

Can a lung mass mean cancer?

Can a lung mass mean cancer?

Not always: But it should be evaluated. Depending on it size and appearance, your doc may be more or less inclined to get a biopsy. I'm assuming he/she will if it is a "mass" and not a "tiny nodule" but not much more can be said with the info provided. Make sure you see your family doc and he/she will decide on the next step. If you smoke, this is the time to quit. ...Read more

Chest ex ray says lungs show increased interstitial markings with no active infiltrate, mass or effusion. What does that mean?

Chest ex ray says lungs show increased interstitial markings with no active infiltrate, mass or effusion. What does that mean?

Depends on context: The interstitium of the lung refers to the area in and around the blood vessels and alveoli (air sacs). This is where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. Inflammation and scarring of the interstitium disrupts this tissues. So the radiologist is noting that there appears to be increased markings in the area. There are many different conditions and disease that cause this pattern. ...Read more
