I am wondering if craving salt, feeling nauseous, & having difficulty concentrating can be due to extremely low iron.?

I am wondering if craving salt, feeling nauseous, & having difficulty concentrating can be due to extremely low iron.?

Craving of salt: Usually means your serum sodium level is low. Hyponatremia (low sodium) can cause cognitive impairment, confusion and even seizures if low enough. I'd have this checked right away, along with your iron, CBC and ferritin. Low iron will cause restless legs, fatigue and result in problems with delivery of Oxygen to the tissues if low enough. ...Read more

I've just started ferrous fumarate as sulphate didn't suit me. I'm feeling quite poorly, my iron stores are 4 is that low?

It should help: The ferrous form of iron is usually the best absorbed. Some people tolerate ferrous fumarate or gluconate better than ferrous sulfate. GI side effects are usually the problem. I presume your ferritin level is 4 ng/ml, which is low suggesting iron deficiency and is the likely cause of feeling poorly. Hopefully you can tolerate the ferrous fumarate and resupply your body's iron. ...Read more

Feels like l get a shiver in my thigh. I have a pinched nerve in lower back. Low iron levels. What could be causing this feeling?

Thigh shivers: If these are muscle twitches, localized muscular or superficial nerve irritability is likely. If frequent diffuse muscle twitches or cramps occur, deficiencies of calcium, magnesium and potassium must be ruled out. I don't think it's a symptom of iron deficiency. The pinched low back nerve may be a factor, however. A neurologist could evaluate you for this. ...Read more

Feeling cold all over lately. Could it be the vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine)?? I take only 10 mg. Not every day. Don't take the iron pill any more.

Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) side effect?: I see you also take Lexapro (escitalopram). Vyvanse alone may cause chills, a rare side effect. Lexapro (escitalopram) combined with Vyvanse may increase Vyvanse side effects. Discuss stopping the Vyvanse with prescribing doctor. If 'feeling cold' disappears, it was caused by this med. If the cold feeling continues, see your pcp to find the cause. I hope this helps. Take care. ...Read more

30 year old female with following out of range blood results: Iron: 235 Tibc: 463, iron % saturation: 51, ferratin: 58. What could this indicate? Feeling very worried!

No worry: Do you have any symptoms? Why were these tests done? All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, there is nothing to be concerned about the results you provided.

Hmmm...: There are hundreds or more conditions and diseases that can cause "feeling weakness" in one's body. So, why suspect low iron?
