Iron Feeling Extremely Low
Can low ferritin alone cause symptoms? I've very low ferritin but my haemoglobin, saturation and iron are all normal. I'm always tired. 20weeks preg.
No: Hello- being pregnant can make you feel tired even if it didn't happen with previous pregnancies. The low ferritin by itself should not cause symptoms. Make sure your prenatal vitamin has iron (i've noticed some of the gummy ones may not) and have your doctor rule-out another cause of your fatigue if it is severe or worsens. ...Read more
Taking iron supplements, my ferritin is very low (5), my tranferrin and iron are normal. My TIBC and % transferrin saturation are high. Cause?
Partially treated: Ferritin reflects body storage iron, while serum iron and transferrin saturation reflect current iron circulating in plasma. When you take oral iron supplement, the amount of iron in circulation (absorbed from gut on its way to storage sites) is transiently high. Your data suggest you have iron deficiency, partially treated, with blood tests taken within a day or two of your most recent iron pill. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Possible...: Low iron and low vitamin d can contribute to feelings of fatigue, which are often associated with depression. Anxiety is less likely to be related, although the anxiety could be secondary, meaning the symptoms cause anxiety symptoms. Treatment for the iron and vit d will help determine whether your mood symptoms are related or not. ...Read more

What might cause high B12 levels? I also had low iron (long-standing anemia) and low vitamin D. CBC was normal except mildly low hemoglobin.
B12 normal range: There is no harm in an elevated B12 level. The normal range is established based on a population study, but the physiology and diet factors that might lead to higher levels than those in the population study are not significant. Don't worry about it in the least. Get follow-up to see that the hemoglobin comes back to normal though. ...Read more

MCHC: MCHC=mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration This value is a calculated value of hemoglobin per red cell. In iron deficiency the body has difficulty making enough hemoglobin, and the resultant cells are both small and low on hgb. The defect with PA is not with hgb synthesis but with cell replication and nuclear maturation, so the amount of hgb/cell is unaffected. ...Read more
