Iron Deficiency Anemia (Overview)

It refers to a low number of red cells in the circulation resulting from a decrease in production in the bone marrow as a result of low amounts of iron available for this purpose. It is the most common type of anemia in the world, commonly due to dietary deficiency, multiple pregnancies, menstrual periods, chronic parasitic infestations, or other causes of chronic bleeding such as colon cancer.

Iron def. anemia: The symptoms in pregnancy for anemia are jsut as in any other conditions but in pregnancy it can affect the fetus as well so you should talk to your ob/gyn md. You will feel tired as in any anemia. Pica is difficult to attribute to iron def. As you normaly could have pica in pregnancy by itself. In both cases we would expect these numbers to be low if a patient is anemic. The MCV is usually low in iron deficiency as well.
