Ionized Calcium (Overview)

Most calcium in the blood is bound to a molecule called albumin, and this calcium fluctuates depending on the level of albumin. The rest is "ionized" calcium and this is freely available for biologic processes. Labs used to only be able to measure total calcium - calcium bound to Albumin + ionized. Now we can measure ionized calcium and not be mislead that calcium is low because Albumin is low.

What does ionized calcium blood test check for?

What does ionized calcium blood test check for?

Free calcium: There is a total calcium blood test that measures both ionized calcium and calcium attached to proteins. You may need to have a separate ionized calcium test if you have factors that increase or decrease total calcium levels, such as abnormal blood levels of Albumin or immunoglobulins. ...Read more

Is there a difference between a calcium vs. Ionized calcium test?

Is there a difference between a calcium vs. Ionized calcium test?

Yes: Calcium has a positive electrical charge; many proteins have a negative electrical charge. So, the opposite charges can cause calcium can bind to proteins. The test for serum calcium measures all of the calcium in the blood (bound & unbound). The ionized calcium measures just the unbound. ...Read more

What is the true measure of hypocalcemia? Low ionized calcium, or low calcium? Thank you.

What is the true measure of hypocalcemia? Low ionized calcium, or low calcium? Thank you.

Depends on context: More information is needed, especially in regards to a correction factor against the serum albumin in hypocalcemia. Ionized calcium is a good measure too, but again, context is necessary. Please see your doctor to help you with clinical context of laboratory values, because the values are not really significant until they are applied to your clinical situation. ...Read more

What can prolonged low ionized calcium in the blood do to one's body? How dangerous is it?

What can prolonged low ionized calcium in the blood do to one's body? How dangerous is it?

It's not good: low calcium levels cause a lot of problems, and can eventually be extremely serious. You might notice twitching and spasms or cramps. ...Read more

A low vitamin d=10.1mg/ml, calcium serum =10.9 mg/dl.Pth=31pg/ml and ionized calcium serum=5.1mg/dl is it normal?Doctor gave me 50, 000 units of vit

D3: D3 is preferred over d2 as it is less toxic and more bioavailable. Aim for serum level of d to be about 60. I would dose you at 10000 iu d3 daily for 2 weeks then 5000 iu daily, and also encourage 5-15 mins of sun exposure daily. Recheck d level in 2-3 months. ...Read more

Why r my calcium levels normal, while my ionized calcium levels are high? I have bone pain, fatigue, kidney stones. I don't know pth level, or vit. D.

Half if calcium: In the blood is bound to proteins and inactive. The other, active, half is the ionized or free calcium, which is what really does the heavy lifting and is more accurate cllinically. You really need the other lab and a good endocrinologist. ...Read more

What does an elevated or low ionized calcium results mean?

What does an elevated or low ionized calcium results mean?

Ionized calcium: Measurement is more accurate than total calcium because it measures the amount of calcium in the blood that is actually available for cellular metabolism. Many possibilities for causes and consequences of low or high calcium, too many to list here. Ask your doctor to interpret your results for you. ...Read more

What does it mean when my IONIZED CALCIUM is LOW and my INTACT PTH is high? What's the cure to this alarming result? Please help. Thanks.

What does it mean when my IONIZED CALCIUM is LOW and my INTACT PTH is high? What's the cure to this alarming result? Please help. Thanks.

Low Ca highPTH: Calcium in our blood circulates in two forms. Bound to albumin. Unbound =ionized. Low ionized Calcium is low unbound calcium. It is abnormal. And low ionized calcium will trigger PTH secretoon to higher levels. Remedy requires figuring out why and fixing root cause. Meanwhile, under guidance, take vitamin D 2000 iu daily and 1000 mg calciun as calcium citrate. Is your kidney function normal? ...Read more

Ionized Calcium 4.65, PTH 133, Calcium 10.3, Vitamin D 7, Phosphorus 4.9, recurrent Kidney stones. Thyroid lobe, two parathyroids removed in 2004.

Uncertain: These test results don't add up to a straight forward answer. However, I would be concerned about the possibility of recurrent primary hyperparathyroidism. You should take Vit D to eliminate Vit D deficiency as a cause for high PTH levels. Once this is done, if you still have high PTH with high calcium levels, you have recurrent primary HPTH and will need surgery again. ...Read more

With my slightly below normal IONIZED CALCIUM and slightly elevated INTACT PTH, is it beneficial to take 1 tablet of CALCIDAY once a day?

With my slightly below normal IONIZED CALCIUM and slightly elevated INTACT PTH, is it beneficial to take 1 tablet of CALCIDAY once a day?

Calcium: You should be taking in at least 1000 mg of calcium per day. Much of calcium is not absorbed. It may be important to determine whether you have a problem with calcium absorption. Vit D deficiency will do this. See your doctor about your Vit D level. ...Read more

My ionized calcium es 1.22 is that low?

My ionized calcium es 1.22 is that low?

Don't think so.: Each lab report should have a reference range of "normal" values. The reference range changes from lab to lab because each lab runs their test differently. Automated (machine) analyzers tend to have less variability, and in most of those machines, an ionized calcium of 1.1 to1.2 Is about in the middle of the "reference range". ...Read more

My ionized calcium is 1.1 mmol/L do i need to worry ?

My ionized calcium is 1.1 mmol/L do i need to worry ?

No: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your level is just below the normal limit. You may consult this site for information on this topic: https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/003486.htm For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex. Get HPV vaccine, if you are under 27 years of age. ...Read more
