What are the benefits of prolonging solid food for babies?

Breast milk/formula: are all that is needed until infants are at least 4-6 months old. Early introduction of solids has been associated with food allergies and over feeding and obesity. I have a 8 month old daughter. I started solid food(homemade) 2 months back. Should i add salt to her food? People say I should not add salt to babies food as the amount of sodium babies need is already there in the formula. She is on similac and the sod

It's true!: No need to add additional salt to infant foods. She is getting her salt requirements through formula and baby food. Adding salt will only cause her to acquire a taste for it, which in the long run is unhealthy. Additionally, excess salt at this age could cause electrolyte imbalances in her small body, which can have serious consequences. ...Read more

When and how to feed solid food to baby?

When and how to feed solid food to baby?

Guidelines: When an infant has enough upper body control to indicate hunger and satiety, is taking > 32 oz. Of formula/day or nursing > 8-10 times/day, & is 4-6 months of age. Use single-ingredient baby foods, don't start with the sweet stuff. Blend " people food ", especially if you can hold off till 6 months. A beaba works well, but is expensive. If baby spits food back out, the meal is over. ...Read more

When should I start my baby on solid food?

When should I start my baby on solid food?

4 months of age: In general, i give my patients the green light to start solid foods when their baby reaches 4 months. Keep in mind that some babies, especially preemies, may not be developmentally ready for this. By solid foods I am referring to jar baby foods, or foods that you will puree yourself at home. A food should be introduced and given for a minimum of 3 days to watch for allergies. ...Read more

How do you know when and how much solid food to feed your baby? He's 4 months already.

How do you know when and how much solid food to feed your baby? He's 4 months already.

Delay until 6mo: Solid foods were once used to make up for deficiencies in home made milk formula used in the 50's to 80's.A return to breast FDG & modern formulas changed the value of solids from nutrition, to a pathway to teach baby to eat & transition to table foods.Waiting until 6m allows baby to sit & participate in a feeding, much as the will when older.Start with a few tablespoons as a paste. ...Read more

How much solid food should I feed my baby?

Let the Baby Decide: There are many variables. The aap recommends no solids until 4-6 months of age.Starting 1 food at a time for 3-4 days to observe possible negative reactions is traditional.Cereal is first, followed by other solids in no specific order. As for quantity, when you have to urge the baby to eat, they are usually done.Remember, there is little evidence as to what is actually the " right" way! ...Read more

Can a baby 3month old have solid food thanks?

Can a baby 3month old have solid food thanks?

A little early: Physical readiness to feed occurs @4-6 mos, when baby has doubled her birth weight & takes >32 oz./day of formula or nurses > 8-10x/day. Developmentally, she needs to be able to sit in a high chair, have enough upper body strength to lean forward when hungry & turn away when full, & be able to transfer a scant 1/2 tsp. Of a pureed food from the spoon to her throat. Till then, it's not gonna work. ...Read more

What do I do if my baby will not eat solid food?

What do I do if my baby will not eat solid food?

Patient persistence: Each infant has his/her own temperament. Infants that are slow to eat solids often have "slow to warm" temperament. That is the are slow to accept change or new experiences, like new foods, new clothes, bathing, etc. If they are slow to accept solids, don't force it. Just patiently continue to try various foods. Once one is accepted then mix it with the next food you are trying to introduce. ...Read more

At what age does solid food, not milk, become more vital for a baby? When can I stop worrying that my baby is getting enough ounces of milk?

At what age does solid food, not milk, become more vital for a baby? When can I stop worrying that my baby is getting enough ounces of milk?

Teeth: I believe our body tells us what we need. When teeth come in it is time to start bringing food in. Breast milk is fine but i tell my new moms that when a child has teeth to chew 9 to 10 months is a good time to start bringing in rice and other vegetables. But only bring in 1 every week or 2 so she can watch for adverse reactions. Breast feeding the first 9-12 months is the best option. ...Read more
