In Moyamoya disease, what is meant by "intimal thickening"? Are the cells proliferating, or are they just growing larger without division?
They appear to be proliferating at an increased rate leading to narrowing and eventual blockage of the artery. May be an association with an abnormality in Ring Finger Protein 213 (RNF 213) gene according to what I was able to research. See link below for info on function of the gene. Http://www. Ncbi. Nlm. Somewhat unclear: Blockages in the carotid artery of a certain severity may increase one's risk of stroke. For those carotid arteries without a blockage, some physicians measure the intima (the inner-most lining of the artery) and derive a value called the imt, or intimal-medial thickness. It's supposed to help us determine severity of atherosclerosis, but this is somewhat controversial. ...Read more
Angiogram 4 yr ago. Heart Op although Clear Artery's no obstructive CAD May not be Perfect as it won't ruleout intimal thickening. Cardiologist's Agree?
Coronary disease: Atherosclerosis is a disease of the artery wall. An angiogram doesn't show the wall of the artery, only the lumen (channel for blood flow). It is possible for there to be plaque in the artery wall & yet to see no narrowing of the lumen on an angiogram. A CT angiogram is better at seeing the artery wall, but has other limitations. For personal advice on your case, consider a consult on HealthTap. ...Read more
Dr S Sinatra talks about Intimal Medial Thickness IMT Analysis of Carotoid Artery. My doctor referred for Ultrasound of Carotoid Artery, this is same?
Yes and no: While similar transducer like radiofrequency tests, the evaluation is limited to a inside layer of the carotid. There is data suggesting this test evaluates cardiovascular risks. Your physician is obtaining what I consider a better option as it will demonstrate flow and possible "plaque burden". However, asymptomatic screening is not recommended by the USPMTF ...Read more

Not unusual: There may be specific issues too, but on the face of it, this is not rare. Especially young men are more sexually driven. It can require more complex stimulation for women and time to learn how to respond. It often balances out as we mature, but it takes patience and understanding.
