How much bleeding is normal after a D&C and hysterscopy (polypectomy)? I have bleeding that seems comparable to a normal period 4 days after surgery.

That's normal: Bleeding comparable to a normal period is well within what is expected and is definitely safe. The only time a woman should be concerned if she has much more bleeding than a normal period, free bleeding (a steady stream of blood), prolonged bleeding for much longer than a period, or if she becomes light-headed with heavy or prolonged bleeding. Late bleeding from a hysterectomy is fairly rare. You did not indicate the reason for the hysterectomy. If it was for non-cancer reasons, your mother's haemoglobin should have resolved by now.
