Severe intermittent pain upper right abdomen. Have had CT & ultrasound of gallbladder all normal. Pain gets worse each time. Help??

HIDA scan to r/o gb: CT and ultrasound are not evaluating function of gall bladder. HIDA nuclear medicine study more specific for functional disturbance and dyskinesia of gall bladder. Low ejection fraction after cck intravenous injection is very suggestive of gall bladder problem.

Pain in upper right abdomen, radiates to my back, what could it be?

Pain in upper right abdomen, radiates to my back, what could it be?

Consider these...: Anatomically, the right upper quadrant (RUQ) of the abdomen includes: liver, gallbladder, pancreatic head, bile ducts and ampulla, c-loop of the duodenum, stomach antrum and pylorus, the hepatic flexure of the colon. Don't forget the diaphragm and lower chest are pretty close by. The abdominal musculature, ribs, and skin can all contribute as well to localizing RUQ pain. An exam is appropriate.

Pain in upper right abdomen, radiates exactly opposite to my back. What could it be?

See doctor: This could be gall stones, inflamed gall bladder, inflammation of pancreas, gastric reflux. I would suggest consulting a doctor as some of these if ignored can be life threatening.

Go to the hospital: Maybe your gall bladder. Call your doctor and see what they think. If the pain is worse with eating fatty or fried foods, than it probably is.

At: At the time of cholecystectomy, some stones can pass in to the bile duct and stay there for a very long time, even years. Occasionally, years later these stones can manifest symptoms similar to a gallbladder attack. It may be worth investigating with simple lab tests including liver function tests.

Is it possible to have pain in upper right abdomen, every test be negative but still have gall bladder problem?

Is it possible to have pain in upper right abdomen, every test be negative but still have gall bladder problem?

Yes: In particular, biliary dyskinesia is thought to be a functional gallbladder problem, and can sometimes be diagnosed with a CCK-HIDA scan. If you get this, make sure to note if the CCK administration causes your pain. Ask your primary care if this test, or a referral to a general surgeon is appropriate. Hope this helps!

Moderate to severe pain in upper right abdomen made worse when I take a deep breadth or move. I don't have an appendix or gallbladder. Thoughts?

Any pain made: Worse with movement suggests musculoskeletal origin, like muscle strain. But abdominal pain has 100's of causes, and some causes originate outside of abdomen, like pneumonia, pleuritis, or pulmonary embolus. And it can be something as superficial as shingles. Get a doctor to help solve this puzzle.

Having nausea, trouble keeping fanything down. Pain in upper right abdomen. Yellow diarrhea for past 3 days. Should I go to an ER or wait till monday?

Likely ER time: If you are not keeping enough down to remain hydrated + having diarrhea, you can be a lot worse off by Monday. The RUQ pain is suspicious for an acute hepatitis / pancreatitis as source--as is the yellow stool, but both can be caused by other things, so should be evaluated to reduce discomfort, check hydration, and get treatment.

Need more testing...: "Hepatitis" means inflammation of liver--due to viral infection (cytomegalovirus, epstein-barr virus, a, b, c, d, etc), familial diseases (hemochromatosis, wilson's, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, etc), infiltrative disease (steatohepatitis from fatty liver, granulomatous hepatitis, foreign body reaction), toxic (alcoholic, tylenol), ischemic, congestive, pregnancy-related, etc. Cause determines

Severe pain in upper right abdomen. It came on suddenly last night and has became worse. It's sharp/burning/numb (if that makes sense) No appetite. No nausea/vomiting Ibuprofen/ice/change in position doesn't help. I have no gallbladder. Any thoughts?

ER-NOW: Suggests either a common duct stone, liver or pancreatic disease, gas trapping or referred stomach pain. Get to an ER for further evaluation and never ignore sudden onset abdominal pain. You have no gallbladder and other issues must be considered.

What can cause sharp stabbing pain in upper right abdomen under ribs?

Could be gallbladder: While there are many things that could cause the symptoms you describe, possible gallstones or gallbladder problems certainly rise to the top of the list. You should see your doctor who may do some blood tests and perhaps an ultrasound to check things out. If you notice similar pains after fatty food intake, you just might have gallbladder problems with potential surgery in your future.
