Might be..: It sounds like you might have sprained your side muscles or rib cage. Ice the area and take anti inflammatory meds( like ibuprofen )if you are not allergic in order to improve symptoms. However,if you develop abdominal pain, urinary abnormalities, trouble breathing, then it might not be related to a strain and then you would need immediate evaluation. Tough Call: I've seen ribs break from coughing. Can be hard to tell. If it hurts more pinpoint directly over bone the chances of a rib fracture are higher. Intercostal sprains are more diffuse, but they can also be pinpoint. Try ice packs, tylenol or Ibuprofen and give it a few days. If not getting better see your doc.
