How do I read a growth chart?

How do I read a growth chart?

Follow trends: Growth charts are based on normal ranges and patterns of growth. Generally, kids follow a line in the height, weight, or head circumference charts, but there's a lot of variability and sometimes "crossing" of growth lines. One number by itself means far less than trends. Anything too high or low - above or below the group of lines - may or may not indicate a problem, but deserves a look. ...Read more

Is a growth chart always correct?

Is a growth chart always correct?

Correct Measurement?: Exellent question! the problem isn't the growth chart, it is the quality of the measurement plotted onto the growth chart. When a point on a growth chart doesn't seem right, the measurement should be taken again. It is so easy to make measurement mistakes in length and height depending on how the measurement is taken and whether the child is moving around. Remember to take the shoes off! ...Read more

How do growth chart percentiles work?

How do growth chart percentiles work?

Identify PATTERNS: Growth charts allow us to determine whether the trend or pattern of a child's growth is healthy. This is crucial, because individual measurements may be +/-, due to squirming babies or slightly different measuring techniques. While it's tempting to focus on individual measurements, this often creates undo anxiety. The big picture--over time--is usually what matters most. ...Read more

I am 5'9". My husband is 5'10". Approximately how tall should our 16mo old boy be? At 26.5 inches he has fallen off the growth chart. Is this odd?

Odd measurements: If your 16 mo boy measures 26.5 inches i would have done a workup on him for failing to grow months ago. He should measure 32 inches or so with his parental genes. If he has been diagnosed with a major medical problem, syndrome or other issue, this might be expected, but not in an otherwise normal kid. ...Read more

My 7 year old son is 4 foot 8 inches tall and weighs 119lbs where is he on the growth chart?

Greater than 99%: Your son is greater than the 99% for both height and weight for boys his age. This means that basically nobody (or very few) boys are larger than he is at his age. What's even more important is his body mass index (BMI). Here's a way for you to calculate that at the following link: https://nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/calculator.aspx. 99% tile "obese" ...Read more

9.7 mnth old has a head circum. of 44cm,47.3% range on growth chart. Is this normal? She babbles, crawls, pulls self up.Not much change from 6mnth appt.

Missing information: Head circumference is normal, near average, but we need the velocity of its growth. Head growth slows normally after 6 mos., but should plot along or near the same growth curve it's always followed. Strings of babbling at 6 mos. become non-specific " da-da, ma-ma" in 9th mo. Gross motor is good. Screens are on firstsigns.org. Follow-up with pede. & MS Early Intervention Program if concerned. ...Read more
